Box Score HICKORY, N.C. - One day after a 3-0 sweep over a conference opponent the momentum slowed for the Newberry volleyball team in a 3-2 loss at Lenoir-Rhyne.
The Wolves (6-5, 1-2 South Atlantic Conference) opened the match with a 25-22 set one victory despite falling behind early 4-0. Newberry battled throughout the first set before taking the lead thanks to seven straight points, which included two service aces by freshman Elayni Stokes (Houston, Texas). The seven point run by Newberry gave the Wolves their first lead of Saturday afternoon before securing the victory on an Anne Staudinger kill.
Newberry was forced to fight from behind in the second set as well, where Lenoir -Rhyne (7-4, 2-1 SAC) held the lead until the 15-14 point. After the Wolves tied the set at 15 points apiece, Newberry was able to withstand a back-and-forth end of the set and sneak away with the set win.
Lenoir-Rhyne seemed to take the matches momentum in the late second set battle as the Bears squeaked out set three, before running away with set four and edging the Wolves in the final set of the afternoon.
The Wolves attack was led by sophomore Samantha Parrish (Angola, Ind.) and freshman Amanda Soper (Simi Valley, Calif.) both of whom finished the afternoon with 15 kills. Junior setter Blair Browning (New Lexington, Ohio) recorded 49 assists, while Lindsey Hollingsworth (Charleston, S.C.) and Parrish both posted 16 dig performances. At the net Jessica King (Los Angeles, Calif.) recorded six block assists.
The Wolves look to get back on track Friday in their home opener against Lincoln Memorial. The Wolves host the Railsplitters September 23 at 7 p.m.
