Wolves drop two at Carson-Newman

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. - The Newberry College softball team dropped its second straight pair of South Atlantic Conference games today, losing to Carson-Newman 9-3 in game one and 4-1 in game two.

Game One: Carson-Newman 9, Newberry 3

The Wolves racked up a 2-1 lead early on in the ball game but couldn't muffle the potent Eagle bats as the scarlet and gray dropped game number one, 9-3.

After giving up the go-ahead run in the top of the first, Newberry (15-24, 2-10 SAC) grabbed the lead in the bottom half of the third inning with Chelsie Hilbourn (Loris, S.C.) starting off the scoring effort with a two out triple to centerfield. Hilbourn then scored the Wolves' first run after a wild pitch by Carson-Newman (33-12-1, 11-3) pitcher Mary Shealy (Clinton, S.C.). Senior Felicia Taylor (Venice, Fla.) then sent a double to right-center and was driven in by a Richelle Mirabal (Tampa, Fla.) RBI single for a 2-1 Newberry lead.

The Wolves added one more run to their lead in the top of the fourth when freshman Codi Kelly (New River, Ariz.) sent home left fielder Jessie Teague (Charlotte, N.C.) on an RBI single to make it 3-1 Wolves.

But the Eagles didn't stay quiet for long, cutting the lead back to one after scoring on a Caitlyn Lance (East Ridge, Tenn.) solo homerun in the bottom half of the fourth.

The Wolves were unable to muster a hit in the final three innings as the Eagles snatched the lead for good in the bottom of the fifth. Kim Whaley (Maryville, Tenn.) earned two RBIs on a double to left field and scored one batter later as Sara Kelley (Birchwood, Tenn.) sent a double of her own to left field, making it 5-3 Carson-Newman after the fifth.

In the bottom of the sixth Shealy blew the game open for Carson-Newman with a grand slam over the right field wall that made it 9-3 Eagles.

The Wolves were good for five hits during the game coming from five different players, with Taylor and Amber Holley (Aiken, S.C.) each hitting a double and Hilbourn getting her first triple of the year early on in the contest.

Taylor went the distance in the circle, giving up nine earned runs on 10 Eagle hits while walking and striking out six Carson-Newman batters.

Game Two: Carson-Newman 4, Newberry 1

In game two it was all Carson-Newman as the Eagles held Newberry to just one run on six hits, taking the game 4-1.

Carson-Newman struck early and often, bringing in their first run in the bottom of the first inning when Whitney Kee (Knoxville, Tenn.) sent a single down the left field line to put the Eagles up 1-0.

The Eagles scored twice more in the second inning on a two-run Leah Price (Spring City, Tenn.) double, putting the home team up three.

In the third the Eagles scored their final run of the game as Bri Shoemake (Ooltewah, Tenn.) homered to make it 4-0 in favor of Carson-Newman.

The Wolves put up their only run of the game in the top of the fifth inning when freshman Jennifer Yancey (Dunwoody, Ga.) scored on a Hilbourn RBI, ending the game at 4-1.

Sophomore Allison Lovelace (Columbia, S.C.) had three of the Wolves' six total hits, going 3-for-3 with a trio of base hits. Kelly was the only Newberry batter with an extra base hit with her double.

Shelley Jeffcoat (Lexington, S.C.) threw all six innings for Newberry, allowing four runs on eight hits and striking out six.

The Wolves return home tomorrow, April 10, for a doubleheader against SAC opponent Anderson. Game time is set for 2 p.m.
