Newberry drops two against SAC leader No. 11 Lenoir-Rhyne

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

NEWBERRY, S.C. - Fresh off their non-conference sweep of the Shaw Bears, the Wolves could not keep their momentum going against No. 11 Lenoir-Rhyne, the hottest team in the South Atlantic Conference.

The Bears pounded out 23 hits through the twinbill compared to just 12 by the host Wolves.

Game One: Lenoir-Rhyne 9, Newberry 0

The Bears came out of the gates focused on offense in the first game of the doubleheader. Newberry pitcher Felicia Taylor (Venice, Fla.) struck out the first batter of the day, but the Bears would knock in a pair of runs later in the inning thanks to an RBI triple by Kat Rivers and an RBI single by Jessica Fellmeth.

The Wolves nearly responded in the second, loading the bases thanks to singles from Angela Cataldo (Sumter, S.C.), Monica Buccellato (Martinez, Calif.) and Jessie Teague (Charlotte, N.C.). Unfortunately, Codi Kelly (New River, Ariz.) popped out to conclude the inning.

Lenoir-Rhyne put up another pair of runs in the fourth with a Carlee Carpenter RBI double and a Rivers RBI single. The Newberry infield did a good job of minimizing the damage in the fifth. The Bears would register one more score before Taylor and Richelle Mirabal (Tampa, Fla.) each used a fielder's choice play to escape a bases loaded situation.

The Bears sent four more runs across home plate during their final inning to complete the scoring.

The Wolves could only scatter two more hits through the remainder of the game, as Bears hurler Dawon Millwood struck out 10 Newberry batters in the seven inning contest.

Game Two: Lenoir-Rhyne 8, Newberry 2

In a reversal of what happened in game one, the Wolves got on the board first after Shelley Jeffcoat (Lexington, S.C.) struck out two of the three Bears who came to the plate in the first half of the initial inning.

Teague got the Wolves offense going with an infield single before Lindsay Cruz (Irmo, S.C.) laid down a sacrifice bunt to advance Teague to second. Chelsie Hilbourn (Loris, S.C.) singled to send Teague to third and then stole second, paving the way for Taylor. The senior picked up a pair of RBIs before she was thrown out trying to advance to second on the play.

It was then that the Bears changed their game plan and utilized the long ball to put the game out of reach for the scarlet and gray.

Fellmeth launched the first offering from Jeffcoat over the centerfield fence, picking up two RBIs while Jody Mizelle accounted for the third Lenoir-Rhyne run of the inning with an RBI fielder's choice.

Fellmeth would strike against in the top of the third inning. She blasted her second homerun of the game beyond the fence in right center to pick up another three RBIs for the Bears.

Lenoir-Rhyne scored its final pair of runs in the game with a sacrifice fly by Megan Laxton in the fifth and an RBI double from rivers in the sixth.

The Wolves continue their SAC schedule as they travel to Jefferson City, Tenn., to take on the Carson-Newman Eagles. The first pitch is scheduled to be thrown at 1 p.m. on Saturday, April 9.
