Newberry falls twice to Catawba in SAC doubleheader

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

SALISBURY, N.C. - The Newberry College softball team failed to keep the Catawba College bats in check as they dropped both ends of a Saturday doubleheader, 7-5 in game one and 7-2 in game two.

Game One: Catawba 7, Newberry 5

Despite putting up five runs on 10 hits, the Wolves couldn't hold off a late surging Catawba squad as they fell to the Indians in game one, 7-5.

With the game knotted at three runs apiece heading into the bottom of the sixth, Newberry (13-20, 2-6 South Atlantic Conference) gave up four runs to Catawba (21-15, 4-4 SAC) who rocked pitcher Felicia Taylor (Venice, Fla.) for five hits including a two RBI single by Kayla Myers (Bryson City, N.C.) and a bases clearing double by Alli Justice (Bishopville, Md.) to put the score at 7-3 in Catawba's favor.

Trailing by four with two outs and runners on second and third, Newberry third baseman Richelle Mirabal (Tampa, Fla.) put the Wolves within two as she sent a single to left field which scored Taylor and Casey Stevens (Coral Springs, Fla.). The Wolves rally ended one batter later, however, when Amber Holley (Aiken, S.C.) grounded out to end the game.

The Wolves held the lead for the majority of the contest after scoring three runs in the top of the third. Chelsie Hilbourn (Loris, S.C.) sent her eighth homerun of the season over the centerfield wall, scoring the game's first two runs. Taylor then tripled to rightfield and was driven in by a Mirabal double to put Newberry up by three.

Catawba then cut the lead to one after scoring two runs in the bottom half of the fourth and tied the game up after tacking on a run in the fifth on a Myers lead off home run before putting the game out of reach in the sixth.

The Wolves had a stellar day at the plate as a team with seven players hitting safely in the game. Mirabal, Holley and Hilbourn each finished the game with two hits with Mirabal driving in three runs and Hilbourn driving in two.

Taylor went 5.2 innings in the circle, giving up seven earned runs on 10 hits. Shelley Jeffcoat (Lexington, S.C.) replaced Taylor in the sixth, recording the final out of the inning for the Wolves.

Game Two: Catawba 7, Newberry 2

In game two it was all Catawba as the Wolves gave up three home runs to the Indians during the 7-2 loss.

During the bottom of the first Catawba put up four runs as Newberry pitcher Jeffcoat gave up three hits to the Indians including a two RBI single by catcher Tara Gibbs (Waynesville, N.C.) to put the home team up early.

In the top of the fifth down 5-0, Newberry showed some life from the plate as the scarlet and gray picked up its only two runs of the game. Freshman Codi Kelly (New River, Ariz.) started off the inning with a single followed by Hilbourn's second homer of the day. Hilbourn's shot over the right field wall puts her in the team lead with nine homers so far this season.

But the momentum was short lived for the Wolves as the Indians picked up homers in the fifth and sixth innings as they coasted to the game two win.

From the circle Jeffcoat went all six innings allowing seven runs, six earned, on ten hits while striking out three and falling to 2-4 on the year.

Codi and Taylor combined for four of the Wolves' eight hits during the game with Hilbourn grabbing the team's only two RBIs.

The Wolves will have little time to rest as they return home to face Shaw tomorrow, April 3, for a doubleheader starting at 2 p.m.
