Box Score 2 GREENEVILLE, Tenn.- The Newberry College softball team got back in the win column today as they split a season ending South Atlantic Conference doubleheader with Tusculum College, winning the first game 1-0 but losing in the second, 6-3.
Game One: Newberry 1, Tusculum 0
Newberry pitcher Shelley Jeffcoat (Lexington, S.C.) held Tusculum to just six hits as she led the Wolves to a 1-0 game one victory over the Pioneers.
In the midst of the pitcher's duel it was Newberry (16-29, 3-15 SAC) who struck first offensively as the Wolves scored the game's only run in the top of the third inning.
The game winning run came with two outs after senior Jessie Teague (Charlotte, N.C.) reached first safely after a throwing error by Tusculum's (30-15, 11-7 SAC) Savannah Ewing (Rogersville, Tenn.). Chelsie Hilbourn (Loris, S.C.) then sent a single up the middle that scored Teague from first.
Tusculum didn't go down without a fight, however, as the Pioneers had runners in scoring position in four out of the seven innings played and stranded a total of eight base runners.
Jeffcoat pitched a gem for head coach Joe Elston's squad as she tossed seven innings while giving up just six hits and a walk while striking out two. Tusculum's Erin Searcy (Coolidge, Ga.) was equally impressive as she held the Wolves to just four hits and no earned runs.
Hilbourn was the Wolves' biggest offensive threat during the contest as she went 2-for-3 from the plate with a pair of singles, an RBI and a stolen base. Senior Richelle Mirabal (Tampa, Fla.) and Lindsay Cruz (Irmo, S.C.) picked up the other two Newberry hits.
Game Two: Tusculum 6, Newberry 3
Despite holding a short lead over the Pioneers in game number two the Wolves failed to bring runners home as they fell in their season finale, 6-3.
Newberry picked up a quick first inning run after a Casey Stevens (Coral Springs, Fla.) RBI sacrifice fly scored Teague for a brief 1-0 Wolves lead. But in the home half of the inning the Pioneers scratched across two runs to erase the Newberry lead for good when a pair of infield hits scored two Tusculum runners.
The Wolves picked up one more in the top of the third inning with a Cruz double to left field that scored pitcher Felicia Taylor (Venice, Fla.) from first to cut the Pioneer lead to one. But Tusculum bats answered in the bottom of the third with a two out rally that scored three.
In the fifth, Stevens picked up another RBI when she singled through the left side, scoring Hilbourn who reached on an Ashley Burke (North Augusta, S.C.) dropped pop fly to lead off the inning. But once again the Pioneers responded, this time with a fielder's choice RBI by Katie Brennan (Manassas, Va.) that scored one to make it 6-3 Tusculum.
The Wolves threatened in the top of the seventh with the tying run at the plate in Stevens, but it was too little too late as the freshman struck out to end the game.
Newberry rocked Tusculum starting pitcher Elizabeth Johnson (Greenville, Wis.) for eight hits, all by different batters, with Cruz getting the only extra base hit with her RBI double in the third inning.
Taylor went 4.1 innings for the Wolves, allowing four hits and six earned runs to the Pioneers while walking seven and striking out two. Jeffcoat replaced Taylor for the final 1.2 innings, giving up just one hit.
