Box Score 2 MISENHEIMER, N.C. - The Wolves relied on big plate performances, including a grand slam by senior Chelsie Hilbourn (Loris, S.C.) in the second game, as they swept Pfeiffer, 7-0 and 5-1.
Game One: Newberry 7, Pfeiffer 0
The Newberry College softball team picked up a big hitting performance from freshman Casey Stevens (Coral Springs, Fla.) as the Wolves picked up a 6-0 win over Pfeiffer in game one.
Newberry (11-12) picked up its first shutout victory of the season as Felicia Taylor (Venice, Fla.) threw seven innings while allowing just four hits and striking out six Pfeiffer (11-12) batters.
The Wolves scored a pair of runs in the top of the first inning after Aissa Gatewood (N. Charleston, S.C.) led things off with a single to center field. After Hilbourn was hit by a pitch, Taylor advanced both runners into scoring position. Casey Stevens (Coral Springs, Fla.) then singled up the middle, scoring both Hilbourn and Gatewood.
Freshman Codi Kelly (New River, Ariz.) then drove in Quinn Hall (Brampton, Ontario, Canada) with an infield single for the Wolves' third run of the game.
After being held scoreless for two innings, the scarlet and gray then added to their lead with a Jennifer Yancey (Dunwoody, Ga.) single to left field which scored Taylor to make it 4-0.
The Wolves added a pair of insurance runs in the sixth for a 6-0 advantage. Senior Richelle Mirabal (Tampa, Fla.) kicked off the inning with a single to center field followed by a Shelby Holland (Charlotte, N.C.) sacrifice bunt that moved Mirabal to second. Kelly then walked and stole second with Mirabal charging for home on a throwing error by Pfeiffer catcher Mikaela Strickland (Bonifay, Fla.). Hilbourn then picked up an RBI as she doubled down the left field line to score Kelly.
In the seventh it was Mirabal coming up big with the bat once again, this time tripling to center field to score teammate Paige Brugh (Indian Land, S.C.) for the game's final run.
Stevens led the offensive charge for the Wolves with her 3-for-4 plate performance and two RBIs. Hilbourn, Gatewood and Mirabal each finished with two hits a piece with all three scoring a run.
Game Two: Newberry 5, Pfeiffer 1
A Hilbourn grand slam home run in the top of the fifth inning gave the Wolves all they needed as they took down the Falcons once again, 5-1.
With the Wolves trailing for the majority of the game after Pfeiffer first baseman Kristen Patterson (Anthem, Ariz.) sent a solo home run over the left field wall for the Falcons only run of the game, Newberry right fielder Hall started off the top of the fifth with a double to left field. Brugh then reached on a bunt followed by Gatewood's RBI bunt, scoring Hall to tie up the game.
Then, with the bases loaded, it was Hilbourn who hit the game winner over the left field wall to give the Wolves their second straight win over Pfeiffer. The hit was Hilbourn's only one of the game, but she made it count as she picked up four RBIs.
Hall finished the game 2-for-3 with a run scored and two doubles while Mirabal and Brugh eached finished with one hit.
Taylor went all seven innings pitching in game two as well, allowing the lone Pfeiffer run of the day on four hits while striking out five.
Newberry will be back in action this Thursday, Feb. 10, as the Wolves travel to Raleigh, N.C., to take on Shaw, who the scarlet and gray swept earlier this season, in doubleheader action. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m.
