Box Score

SPARTANBURG, S.C. - The Newberry College Wolves' softball team (8-11) racked up 11 hits as they took down Fairmont State (1-6) for the Wolves' third consecutive victory, 10-6, at the Mid-South Tournament on Saturday. Newberry's late game scheduled against Charleston (W. Va.) was called off due to rainy conditions at the 295 Softball Complex.

The Wolves jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first after Casey Stevens' (Coral Springs, Fla.) two RBI single which scored Chelsie Hilbourn (Loris, S.C.) and Aissa Gatewood (N. Charleston, S.C.).

Newberry then put up a seven spot in the top of the third on five hits. Stevens was good for another two RBI single to right center field followed by an Amber Holley (Aiken, S.C.) double down the left field line, scoring Stevens and pitcher Felecia Taylor (Venice, Fla.). Gatewood then drove in a pair with a single to centerfield to end the inning and put the score at 9-0.

After holding Fairmont scoreless for four innings, Taylor walked two and gave up a hit, loading the bases. The senior then walked in the first Falcon run of the game and then allowed a grand slam to put the score at 9-5.

Stevens then picked up her fifth RBI of the contest in the sixth as she drove in Gatewood with a single through the right side for the Wolves' 10th run.

Fairmont threatened with the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh but the Wolves held strong, allowing just one more run before recording the final out of the game.

Stevens was 3-for-3 at the plate with 5 RBIs and a pair of stolen bases. Gatewood was 3-for4 with a pair of RBIs and three runs scored.

Taylor picked up her fourth win after throwing 4.1 innings allowing five runs on four hits. Holley replaced the struggling Taylor, going the last 2.2 innings giving up just one run on two hits and striking out three.

The Wolves are slated to take on Belmont Abbey at 3 p.m. Sunday in their final game of the Mid-South Tournament. Newberry returns home Monday for a 2 p.m. doubleheader against Le Moyne (N.Y.).
