Box Score 2 SPARTANBURG, S.C. - The Newberry College softball team took a pair of thrillers as the Wolves won their first two games in the Mid-South Tournament, picking up game one, 3-1 and game two, 10-9 in nine innings.
Game Two: Newberry 10, Glenville State 9 (9 innings) - BOX SCORE
Newberry (7-11) overcame seven fielding errors to take down Glenville State (0-3) with an Aissa Gatewood (N. Charleston, S.C.) walk off single in the bottom of the ninth for a 10-9 victory. Gatewood came in with the game tied up 9-9 and the bases loaded, scoring Amber Holley (Aiken, S.C.) for the walk off run.
The Wolves were down two coming into the bottom of the ninth and picked up three runs on three hits in their last at bat. Senior Jessie Teague (Charlotte, N.C.) ripped a two RBI single to tie the game up before the Gatewood game winner.
The Wolves started the game off well, scoring two runs in the bottom of the first on a pair of wild pitches by Glenville pitcher Ally Southall. Newberry then allowed four to the Pioneers in the top of the third after committing four errors in the field to give Glenville the lead.
Felicia Taylor (Venice, Fla.) then blasted a solo home run to right field to bring the Wolves within one in the bottom of the third. Angela Cataldo (Sumter, S.C.) then drove in freshman Jennifer Yancey (Dunwoody, Ga.) later in the inning to tie it up once again.
The teams exchanged a pair of runs each in the bottom of the sixth to keep the contest knotted at six a piece. In the eighth, it was Pioneer Erin Morgan's RBI double that put Glenville up by one. With their back's against the wall it was Gatewood who came up big, sprinting home from third on a wild pitch to send the game to the ninth where her late inning heroics kicked in once again.
Newberry picked up a season high 18 hits in a game which lasted over three hours to pick up the team's seventh victory of the season.
Angela Cataldo (Sumter, S.C.) was 4-for-4 from the plate with a double while Taylor was 3-for-5. Gatewood and Hilbourn finished with two hits each during the contest.
Game One: Newberry 3, Columbus State 1 - BOX SCORE
The Wolves played near perfect ball as they handed Columbus State (17-4) its fourth loss of the season, 3-1.
After three and a half scoreless innings it was the Wolves who struck first with a Holley double to left field, scoring Ashley Roof (Columbia, S.C.) for the game's first run. Freshman Codi Kelly (New River, Ariz.) then doubled to center field to score Holley later in the inning for a two run Newberry advantage.
The Wolves then tacked on an insurance run in the bottom of the fifth with Hilbourn scoring on a wild pitch.
After going five innings without giving up a run, Taylor slipped up with her first batter faced in the top of the sixth, allowing a one run homer for the Cougar's only run of the ball game.
Taylor threw all seven innings for the scarlet and gray, giving up just one run on five hits. As a team, the Wolves committed just one error in the seven innings of play.
Kelly and Holley both finished with two hits with Holley grabbing two stolen bases as well.
The Wolves will play two more tomorrow in Spartanburg, S.C. Game one is set for 11 a.m. against Fairmont State with game two kicking off at 3 p.m. against Belmont Abbey.
