Wolves sent home with a pair of losses by Saints

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

GAFFNEY, S.C. - After dropping a one run ball game in the first half of a doubleheader, the Newberry College softball team dug deep to stay alive in game two but ultimately fell to Limestone College in extra innings, 9-8.

Game Two: Limestone 9, Newberry 8 (8 inn.)

For the second straight day the Newberry softball team found itself in an extra inning affair. The Wolves battled back after going down by three runs but fell to the Saints, 9-8, in eight innings.

Down to the Wolves' last out in the top of the seventh inning it was Felicia Taylor (Venice, Fla.) who stepped up the plate for Newberry (12-17), crushing a solo home run over the right field wall to knot the game at eight.

After failing to convert in the bottom half of the seventh, Limestone (12-22-1) came out and won the game in the eighth with a walk off single by Hannah Mills (Richmond, Va.) scoring the game winning run from third.

The Wolves scored eight runs on just six hits during the ballgame, capitalizing on four Limestone errors, including Taylor's seventh homerun of the year which kept the game alive. No one for Joe Elston's squad had more than one hit during the game with Taylor smacking the only one for extra bases.

Newberry jumped up quickly on the Saints after failing to score at all in game number one. Casey Stevens (Coral Springs, Fla.) kicked off the three run inning as she bunted home freshman Codi Kelly (New River, Ariz.) for the game's first run. Paige Brugh (Indian Land, S.C.) then singled home senior Aissa Gatewood (N. Charleston, S.C.) with a slow roller back to the pitcher. Stevens then went on to score after a throwing error by the Limestone third baseman for a 3-0 lead.

Wolves pitcher Shelley Jeffcoat (Lexington, S.C.) then gave up five runs to the Saints as they rocked the sophomore for six hits in the bottom of the first, putting the scarlet and gray down two.

Both teams quieted down in the second after an explosive first inning and it wasn't until the bottom of the third that either team scored again with Limestone picking up another run on one more hit.

In the fifth the Wolves tied the game up for the first time in the top of the inning with Kelly leading things off with a single and finding her way to home after a stolen base and two wild pitches. Lindsay Cruz (Irmo, S.C.) then picked up an RBI as she singled to left field, scoring Chelsie Hilbourn (Loris, S.C.). Newberry made it 6-6 after another Limestone error scored Ashley Roof (Columbia, S.C.).

The tie was short lived, however, as the Saints scratched across the go ahead run in the bottom of the fifth as a trio of Newberry errors brought home a Limestone run.

Both teams scored a run in the sixth, forcing Newberry into the pressure situation in the top of the seventh when Taylor came through with the clutch hitting.

Jeffcoat threw 115 pitches in 7.1 innings of work before giving up the walk off hit. Limestone took Jeffcoat for 15 hits while striking out three times.

Game One: Limestone 1, Newberry 0

Limestone pitcher Emily Walace (Winchester, Ky.) got the best of the scarlet and gray in game one as she held the Wolves to just three hits during the 1-0 Newberry loss.

Newberry picked up two of its four total hits right off the bat after starting the game off by loading the bases. Limestone held tight on defense, however, not allowing a run to the Wolves.

The Saints picked up their game winning run in the top of the second after leading the inning off with a pair of singles. With the bases loaded and one out, Jordan Smith (Goose Creek, S.C.) popped one up to Newberry right fielder Holley that scored Shelley Brown (Wilmington, N.C.).

Kelly put Newberry in scoring position when she knocked a triple to right field in the top of the third. But the Wolves failed to bring her home after Holley hit into the Limestone double play to end the inning.

Wallace threw five innings for the Saints giving up just three hits to the scarlet and gray and striking out two. Shelby Webb (Hillard, Fla.) wrapped up the game for Limestone, picking up the save while allowing one hit in two innings of work. Taylor received the start in the circle for the Wolves, going all six innings while giving up the lone run of the ball game on six hits and striking out three.

Stevens put up a 2-for-3 plate performance with Gatewood and Kelly picking up the only other two Newberry hits.

The Wolves will return to South Atlantic Conference play this weekend as they host the Railsplitters of Lincoln Memorial in a Saturday doubleheader on March 26. Game time is set for 1 p.m.
