Box Score 2 BREVARD, N.C. - Despite clawing their way back into game number one, the Newberry College softball team couldn't avoid the sweep as they dropped two games to South Atlantic Conference foe Brevard College on Tuesday.
Game One: Brevard 7, Newberry 6 (8 inn.)
The Wolves picked up an early three run lead in game number one but couldn't hold on as they fell to Brevard in eight innings, 7-6.
Newberry (12-15, 1-3 SAC) came out of a bases loaded jam in the bottom of the first inning and responded by scratching across three runs in the top of the second, capitalizing on four Brevard (21-8, 3-1 SAC) fielding errors. With Felicia Taylor (Venice, Fla.) on third and Casey Stevens (Coral Springs, Fla.) on second, third baseman Richelle Mirabal (Tampa, Fla.) sent a single into right field that scored Taylor and Stevens for a 2-0 lead. Mirabal then went on to score after a throwing error by Brevard third baseman Kayla Clemens (Sebring, Fla.).
Not to be outdone, the Tornados picked up two runs in the bottom of the inning, cutting the lead to just one after one Brevard hit and a pair of Newberry errors.
The Wolves then went scoreless in the third before allowing three more to the Tornados in the bottom half of the inning on four singles by Brevard batters, putting the score at 5-3.
Newberry picked up one more run in the fourth with Stevens reaching on the fifth Brevard error of the game to lead things off. Senior speedster Chelsea Chipoletti (Brooksville, Fla.) then pinch ran for Stevens, stealing second and advancing to third on a wild pitch. Mirabal then picked up another RBI with a sacrifice fly to right field.
Brevard tacked on an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth with a Brittany Jones (Fort Mill, S.C.) double to center field that scored Becca Curlee (Eagle River, Alaska) to put the score at 6-4 heading to the seventh.
With their backs against the wall the Wolves' bats responded. Senior Aissa Gatewood (N. Charleston, S.C.) led off the inning with a triple off the centerfield wall and was followed by freshman Codi Kelly's (New River, Ariz.) game tying home run over left center field to knot the game at six.
In extra innings it was the Tornados who came out on top after the Wolves failed to put a run on the board in the top of the eighth inning. Jones was the hero for Brevard with a ground ball to Kelly that scored Curlee for the walk off run.
Newberry picked up six hits during the game compared to the Tornados' 10 with the teams combining for nine errors, four by the Wolves and five for the host team.
Taylor went just 2.1 innings allowing four runs, two earned, on three hits while uncharacteristically walking two and hitting three batters. Shelley Jeffcoat (Lexington, S.C.) wrapped up the game for the Wolves allowing three runs on seven hits.
Game Two: Brevard 6, Newberry 0
Despite keeping the ball game to a one run affair, Newberry couldn't put an end to a five run Brevard rally in the bottom of the fourth as they fell in game two, 6-0.
The Tornados picked up their first run in the home half of the second inning after Newberry starting pitcher Amber Holley (Aiken, S.C.) gave up a solo homer to Curlee to put the Wolves back one.
Newberry held off Brevard for another inning but failed to score a run in the top of the fourth before the Tornados smashed the game open with a five run inning for the 6-0 lead. Clemens capped of the inning with a bases clearing double after Taylor replaced the struggling Holley in the circle.
Newberry managed just two hits during the shut out, a base hit by Chelsie Hilbourn (Loris, S.C.) and a triple by Taylor. The Wolves did, however, strand six base runners during the contest.
Holley lasted 3.2 innings pitching for Joe Elston's squad giving up all six Tornado runs, only one of which was earned. Tayler went the last 2.1 innings allowing three hits and striking out one.
The scarlet and gray will be back in action tomorrow, March 23, as they travel to Gafney, S.C., to take on Limestone (10-22). First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m.
