HARTSVILLE, S.C. - After dropping six straight contests, the Newberry College softball team bounced back today as they completed a sweep of Coker College, 13-4 in five innings in game one and 7-4 in game two.
Game One: Newberry 13, Coker 4
Newberry (5-7) came out blasting in game one as the Wolves took down Coker (3-3) 13-4 in just five innings.
The Wolves opened up the contest by dropping seven runs on the Cobras in the top of the first inning. Codi Kelly (New River, Ariz.) led off the game with a single followed by a walk by teammate Casey Stevens (Coral Springs, Fla.). Senior Felicia Taylor (Venica, Fla.) then ripped a two RBI single to put Newberry on the board. Later in the inning it was an Amber Holley (Aiken, S.C.) three RBI double and a Kelly RBI single which gave the Wolves a 7-0 advantage.
Coker managed just one run in the bottom if the first but Newberry senior Chelsie Hilbourn (Loris, S.C.) quickly responded with her team leading fourth homerun in the second to keep the margin at seven. The Cobras then responded with a three-run inning in the bottom of the second, but Coker couldn't muffle the Wolves bats as the scarlet and gray dropped two more runs in the fourth and three more in the fifth to make it a 13-4 final.
Kelly led the way for the Wolves with her 3-for-4 performance from the plate with two runs scored. Holley, Hilbourn and Lindsay Cruz (Irmo, S.C.) each finished with two hits with Holley and Cruz each grabbing three RbIs.
As a team, the Wolves picked up 14 hits with just one strikeout.
Shelley Jeffcoat (Lexington, S.C.) picked up her first win of the season after tossing all five innings allowing 10 hits and striking out four.
Game two: Newberry 7, Coker 4
Things were a bit tighter in game two as the Wolves picked up their second win of the day, 7-4.
Newberry shot out to an early lead once again, putting up a three spot in the first on another Hilbourn RBI single to score Kelly. Ashley Roof (Columbia, S.C.) then drove in Hilbourn and Stevens on a base hit to centerfield to end the inning.
The Wolves put up two more in the top of the third on a Kayla Latham (Saluda, S.C.) double which drove in two. Hilbourn then blasted her second homer of the day in the fourth, this one a two run shot over the left field wall to keep the Wolves on top.
The Cobras threatened in the fourth, scoring three runs on five hits and one Newberry error. Coker then managed just one more run in the fifth to make it 7-4 but couldn't crack Newberry pitcher Holley as she ended the rally.
Holley went the distance giving up four runs on 10 hits and striking out one.
Hilbourn was an impressive 2-for-4 at the plate with two runs scored and three RBIs and her fifth homer of the season while Stevens and Kelly finished with two hits as well.
