GREENWOOD, S.C. - The Newberry College softball team couldn't find its groove offensively as the Wolves dropped both ends of a Saturday afternoon doubleheader to Lander, 7-0 and 4-2.
Game Two: Lander 4, Newberry 2
Newberry (3-7) bounced back after a tough game one loss to put some pressure on Lander (7-3), but it wasn't enough to stop the potent Bearcat offense.
Lander came out in the bottom of the second and dropped three runs on Newberry, capitalizing on three Wolves fielding errors and one hit. The Bearcats scored their final run of the game one inning later in the bottom of the third on an Alyssa Hartley (Indian Land, S.C.) single.
The Wolves showed life in the top of the fifth with Casey Stevens (Coral Springs, Fla.) leading off the inning with a double to left field. Monica Buccalleto (Martinez, Calif.) then singled in Stevens for the first Newberry run of the day.
Newberry managed to put up one more in the sixth after freshman Codi Kelly (New River, Ariz.) doubled to lead off the inning and later scored on a throwing error by the Lander third baseman to make it 4-2. The Wolves were then blanked in their final at bat to make the game final.
Felicia Taylor (Venice, Fla.) went the distance in the circle for Joe Elston's squad, giving up five hits and just one earned run while striking out four. Despite Taylor's solid performance from the rubber, the Wolves couldn't undo their five fielding errors to give the Bearcats the game.
Stevens and Kelly both finished with two hits and the only two Newberry runs on the day.
Game One: Lander 7, Newberry 0
Lander pitcher Hayley Leissner (Jefferson, Ga.) struck out 13 Wolves as the Bearcats eased their way to a 7-0 win over Newberry.
Newberry managed just four hits during the game and struggled mightily to stop the Bearcats' bats. Lander picked up its first two runs in the bottom of the third on a Newberry error and five more in the fourth on five hits.
Pitcher Amber Holley (Aiken, S.C.) went 3.1 innings for Newberry, allowing seven runs on six hits and was replaced by Taylor who went the final 2.2 innings allowing just three hits.
The Wolves will be back on the field tomorrow, Sunday, Feb. 20, as they take on Coker in a doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. in Hartsville.
