HARROGATE, Tenn. - The Newberry College women's basketball team snapped a two-game losing streak as they cruised past South Atlantic Conference foe Lincoln Memorial, 81-64.
Newberry (13-9, 8-6 SAC) found itself in yet another tight ball game at the half, leading Lincoln Memorial (8-14, 3-11) by just three, 33-30. But the Wolves took charge in the second half, going on an 8-0 run to start off the period and never looking back as they handed the Railsplitters their seventh straight loss.
“This was probably the most sound game we've played in a while,” said Newberry head coach Sean Page. “We worked hard under the basket which I've been preaching to the kids all week and they responded. We held a physical team to just five offensive rebounds and anytime you can do that you're going to be successful.”
The Wolves jumped out to a 12-point lead early in the first half and appeared to have solid control over the ball game as a Helen McKinney (Owensboro, Ky.) triple put Newberry ahead by double-digits early. A Leanne Watson jumper at the 7:46 mark made it 22-9 in favor of Newberry. But the Railsplitters, not to be outdone, went on a scoring rampage to end the first half with a 21-8 run.
Coming out of the locker room it was back-to-back three-pointers by seniors Jessica Bearzatto (Melbourne, Australia) and McKinney followed by a pair of Leeara Creet (Brisbane, Australia) free throws to ease the Wolves into the win.
Newberry picked up 11 steals, five alone by Mckinney, during the win, picking up 18-points off of 18 Lincoln Memorial turnovers.
“We played very clean game tonight and that's the key,” said Page. “We protected the ball well and we got good performances both offensively and defensively from our key players. I'm happy with the win but we need to keep our heads down and take care of business in these last four games.”
Newberry leading scorer Helen McKinney took control of the offense, putting in 24-points while going 8-of-16 from the floor and 5-for-9 from beyond the arc. Watson had her best scoring night of the year, putting in 19-points and going 7-of-8 from the free-throw line. Creet was also in double-digit scoring figures with 10-points and a team high nine rebounds.
As a team, the scarlet and gray went 29-of-64 from the field and 16-of-19 from the charity stripe while outrebounding the Railsplitters 38-33.
The Wolves now head to Wingate, N.C., to take on the Bulldogs this Wednesday, Feb. 16, for a 6 p.m. matchup.
