GAFFNEY, S.C. — For the sixth time this season and fourth game in a row freshman Haylee Lepaio recorded a double-double as the Wolves toppled the Limestone College Saints 66-63 on Saturday inside Limestone's Timken Center.
Newberry (7-2) trailed for the opening five minutes before Limestone (5-4) relinquished it's lead with 14:48 remaining in the first half as senior Keisha Henderson (Columbia, S.C.) tied the game with a layup. It was Lepaio (Bathurst, New South Wales, Australia) who secured the Wolves' first lead of the afternoon on a layup with 14:02 on the clock.
The Wolves and Saints battled back-and-forth for much of the first half before a 3-pointer by sophomore Rebecca Matijevic (Gold Coast, Queensland, Australia) fell through the net with four seconds remaining in the half to give Newberry an eight-point lead entering halftime.
Newberry led for the entire second half as the Wolves extended their lead to as many as 18 points when sophomore Ellie Gleeson's (Albury, New South Wales, Australia) 3-point make put the Wolves up 59-41.
The 18-point lead did not last long as the Saints cut into the Wolves lead and rallied to cut the Wolves lead to as few as two points. A pair of clutch free throws by freshman Zara Pearson (Echuca, Victoria, Australia) with 18 seconds remaining put Newberry up by four.
A layup by Limestone's Tia Williams gave Newberry the ball back with 10 seconds remaining and a two-point lead. Pearson again was sent to the line by Limestone where she would make one free throw to secure a three point lead for Newberry as the Saints were unable to get a shot off in the remaining five seconds of the game.
Lepaio led all scorers with 19 points and led Newberry with 10 rebounds. Junior Neicey Lewis (Riverdale, Ga.) scored ten points, tallied two assists and added two steals to her stat line. Henderson led the Wolves with four assists.
Newberry returns to action at home on December 30 when the Wolves play host to North Georgia at 2 p.m.
