Stanton's hat trick leads Wolves in 6-0 win at USCB

Box Score

BLUFFTON - The first Newberry women's soccer hat trick since the 2002 season by freshman Mary Stanton helped secure a 6-0 victory by the Wolves over the USC Beaufort Sand Sharks on Thursday afternoon.

Stanton (Greenville, S.C.) scored first in the 13th minute when junior defender Cassie Smith (Spartanburg, S.C.) sent a through ball toward the 18-yard box that Stanton ran onto and finished into the far end of the goal. Newberry (8-6-0) picked up a second goal as Stanton scored off a cross from freshman Brayden Miller (Lyman, S.C.) in the 25th minute.

The Sand Sharks (1-13-0) surrendered a third goal when Smith and junior Ashley Reetz (Charleston, S.C.) linked up to feed Stanton for her third goal of the afternoon. Stanton's hat trick was the first for Newberry since Mandi Butler netted three goals in an 11-0 victory over Converse on October 4, 2002.

Junior Tiffany Kinner (North Myrtle Beach, S.C.) got in on the action in the 42nd minute when a loose ball just outside the 18-yard box fell to her feet. Kinner calmly placed a shot under the cross bar for her fifth goal of the season.

The Wolves netted two second half goals as freshman Gabrielle Brodie (Rolleston, Canterbury, New Zealand) scored her second goal of the year in the 62nd minute. The native of New Zealand took the ball herself into the 18-yard box and placed a shot off the post that ricocheted into the goal.

A pair of Wolves picked up their first points of the season as freshman Elise Sanchez (Tujunga, Calif.) charged into the 18 and took a hard shot on Sand Sharks backup keeper Krystan Gallman. The shot was pushed away by Gallman, but junior Katie Sas (Columbia, S.C.) was in perfect position to clean up the rebound for her first goal of the season.
Senior goalkeepers Megan Hrenchir (Lawrence, Kan.) and Emily Rhoades (Buckley, Wash.) combined to keep a clean sheet for the Wolves.

Newberry returns to the Newberry College Soccer Field on Saturday at 2 p.m. when the Wolves host conference opponent Brevard College.
