Wolves push No. 9 Bears to final minute before dropping 4-3 decision

NEWBERRY - Despite take a 2-0 lead into halftime, the Newberry women's soccer team was knocked off 4-3 by No. 9 Lenoir-Rhyne on Saturday afternoon.

The Wolves (7-6-0, 3-4-0 South Atlantic Conference) controlled the possession for most of the first half and took advantage in the 36th minute when free kick was punched out by Bears (12-1-0, 7-0-0 SAC) keeper Caitlin Scruggs. A loose ball snuck out to junior Theresa Berman (Toronto, Ontario, Canada) who one timed a high lofting shot from outside the 18-yard box that fell into the back of the goal for her first tally of the season.

Newberry scored again in the 40th minute when junior Cassie Smith (Spartanburg, S.C.) fired a low cross into the box that was redirected into the goal from eight yards by freshman Brayden Miller (Lyman, S.C.). Miller's goal was her second of the season.

The Wolves were unable to enjoy the halftime lead long as Lenoir-Rhyne scored in the 48th minute when Hanna Kiebel connected from inside the 18-yard box. In the 56th minute Catherine Hauck converted from the penalty spot to tie the match at 2-2.

Newberry countered in the 65th when a shot from junior Ashley Reetz (Charleston, S.C.) was saved by Scruggs and was one timed off the rebound by senior Jesse Langdon (Raleigh, N.C.) for her second goal of the season.

The Bears scored the game tying goal in the 76th when Elizabeth Hawes scored on a loose ball inside the 18-yard box. The match looked like it was headed to overtime until Lenoir-Rhyne's Laura Linehan scored her ninth goal of the season in the 89th minute when she chipped a shot in from about seven yards out.

The Wolves return to action on Thursday when they travel to USC Beaufort for a 3 p.m. kick off. Newberry returns home on Saturday October 22 at 2 p.m. against Brevard.
