NEWBERRY - After dropping a 70-68 game to South Atlantic Conference opponent Mars Hill on Wednesday, the Newberry College women's basketball team found itself in another tight game. But this time, the Wolves came out on the right end as they defeated Lincoln Memorial, 65-61.
Newberry (7-5, 2-2 SAC) was up just one on Lincoln Memorial (5-7, 0-4 SAC) with seven seconds to go when guard Helen McKinney (Owensboro, Ky.) nailed home her sixth three-pointer of the game to give the Wolves a two possession lead with just seconds to go. Keisha Henderson (Columbia, S.C.) then robbed Railsplitter leading scorer Dayshalee Salaman (Carolina, Puerto Rico) to seal the win for the Wolves.
“Well we're just happy to finally get another conference win,” said Newberry head coach Sean Page of the victory. “We struggled in the second half once again like we have a tendency to do and that's something we'll need to work on if we want to get better.”
After playing a first half that consisted of six ties and nine lead changes, Newberry went into the locker room with a comfortable 39-30 lead after closing out the first period with a nine-point run.
The Wolves scored seven straight with 7:41 to play to bring the lead up to 10, but a cold spell from the field saw the Railsplitters jump back in the game, down just two with 2:14 to go before the big McKinney triple.
McKinney scored 21 during the win, going 7-of-19 from the field and 6-of-8 from beyond the arc, marking her fourth straight 20-plus point performance. The senior now sits at 10th on the Newberry all-time scorers list with 1,136 total career points.
“Some positives from tonight are we shot as good from the field as we have all year,” said Page. “We didn't play our best basketball but we played good enough to win and I'm happy to see signs of us improving and maturing as a team.”
Briana Johnson (Irmo, S.C.) was the only other Newberry player in double-digits with 10 points while teammates Henderson and Leanne Watson (Stone Mountain, Ga.) each had seven with Henderson grabbing five steals. Senior Jessica Bearzatto (Melbourne, Australia) had a season and team high 11 assists during the game.
The Wolves were once again outscored in the paint with Lincoln Memorial earning 49 points under the basket to Newberry's 28.
Newberry will continue the gauntlet of SAC opponents as the Wolves face off against Anderson on Jan. 12, at 6 p.m., in Anderson, S.C.
