Box Score HARROGATE, Tenn. - The Newberry Wolves and the Lincoln Memorial Lady Railsplitters played one of the tightest matches in recent memory, but the Wolves came out on the wrong end of a 3-2 match as the Lady Railsplitters prevailed with set scores of 22-25, 25-15, 23-25, 29-27 and 16-14.
Newberry falls to 10-5 overall and 3-3 in South Atlantic Conference play after a pair of losses on the Tennessee road trip, while LMU is now 8-2 overall and 4-2 in SAC play.
The Wolves return home for two matches in Eleazer Arena during Homecoming week, starting with the Lander Bearcats on Wednesday night at 7 p.m.
Freshman Samantha Parrish (Angola, Ind.) led all players in the match with 25 kills and earned a double-double with 18 digs. Kara Harris (Grandview, Texas) also had a double-double with 19 kills and 14 digs. Brianna Blakely (Houston, Texas) dished out 59 assists and had 10 digs to earn a double-double.
The match was tight throughout all five sets. After Newberry scored the first three points of the game, the Lady Railsplitters came back and took a lead, but could not extend it to more than four points. Newberry would chip away at the lead and go ahead by four points before taking the first set by a 25-22 score.
Newberry had a .275 hitting percentage in the opening set to help take the early 1-0 lead.
The Lady Railsplitters took the second set by a 25-15 count thanks in large part to a seven point run that gave the hosts an insurmountable lead. LMU hit .364 in the set while limiting Newberry to a .107 percentage.
The third set came down to the wire, with the Wolves pulling it out at the very end, 25-23. Newberry led by as many as six points before LMU came back to take a 23-22 lead. But the Wolves scored three straight points to take a two sets to one lead.
The Wolves were only able to hit .122 in the set, but limited LMU to .075 to pull out the set win.
Newberry had a chance to earn the win in a wild fourth set, but could never put the finishing touches on a set that had eight ties and four lead changes.
Neither squad led by more than three points at any time in the set. LMU had set point on three occasions and Newberry held set point once before the Lady Railsplitters could take the 29-27 set win.
The deciding fifth set was just as closely played as the previous sets, with six ties and two lead changes. LMU had match point at 14-13 before Newberry tied it up on a service error at 14-14, but an LMU kill and a Newberry service error gave LMU the match win.
A large difference in the service game did not help the Wolves' chances, as Newberry recorded four service aces but had 13 service errors. Newberry hit .177 overall, while LMU hit .224.
