Box Score WINGATE, N.C. - The Newberry College softball team fell in the second round of the Food Lion South Atlantic Conference Tournament on Friday morning. The third-seeded scarlet and gray couldn't respond to a three-run first inning by second-seed Carson-Newman and ultimately fell, 4-1.
Newberry now stands at 30-12 on the year while Carson-Newman holds a 35-8 record and the No. 22 ranking in the nation. The loss extends the road to the championship but does not eliminate the scarlet and gray. Newberry will continue in tournament action with a second Friday game at 4:30 p.m.
Amanda Huckestein (Port Charlotte, Fla.) was tagged with the loss despite surrendering just four hits and striking out 11 in six innings of work. Mary Shealy (Clinton, S.C.) earned the win for Carson-Newman and held Newberry to three hits.
The Eagles started early in the affair, reaching two base runners by way of a single and a walk before Sara Little (Calhoun, Ga.) homered to left center to put Carson-Newman up, 3-0.
Newberry chipped into the lead in the top of the second after Whitney Wiles (Iva, S.C.) reached on an infield single and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt and groundout. Chelsea Chipoletti (Brooksville, Fla.) was hit by a pitch later in the inning, and with runners on first and third, Newberry maneuvered a double steal which allowed Wiles to cross the plate.
C-N extended the lead back to three runs, however, in the bottom of the second when a pair of Newberry throwing errors allowed Leah Price (Spring City, Tenn.) to round the bases despite grounding back to the pitcher.
Felicia Taylor (Venice, Fla.) created an opportunity for Newberry with a one-out, sixth-inning triple down the right field line. Jessie Teague (Charlotte, N.C.) grounded back to the pitcher but the throw went home and beat Taylor to the plate. Teague attempted to take second on the play but the throw beat her as well, ending the inning with the score still 4-1.
The scarlet and gray will now look to advance through the losers' bracket of the double-elimination tournament. No. 3 Newberry will await the winner of No. 5 Wingate and No. 8 Catawba. The scarlet and gray will face the winner of that game at 4:30 p.m. on Friday afternoon.
