Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

NEWBERRY, S.C. - The Newberry College softball team split its doubleheader with Lander Saturday afternoon to move to 2-2. Newberry won the opener with a 3-0 victory but was held scoreless in the second, falling 1-0.

Amanda Huckestein (Port Charlotte, Fla.) earned the win in the first game and improved to 2-0 on the season. Huckestein struck out six and held the Bearcats to three hits in the game.

Sara Powell (Ocean View, Del.) and Huckestein each recorded RBIs in the first game as Newberry cruised to a 3-0 victory.

Hayley Leissner (Jefferson, Ga.) pitched a gem for Lander in the second game, holding Newberry to two hits in seven innings as she earned the win.

Rachelle Adkins (Newman, Ga.) drove in the game's lone run with an RBI single in the sixth as Lander earned the 1-0 victory.

Game One: Newberry 3, Lander 0 - Box Score
Newberry got started quickly in the first game when Aissa Gatewood (North Charleston, S.C.) led off the bottom of the first with a lead-off walk. Jessica Reid (Walhalla, S.C.) moved Gatewood up with a sacrifice bunt and Huckestein drove in the run with an RBI single to left center.

Newberry did more damage in the second after Tiffany Pigage (Lexington, S.C.) led the inning off with a single up the middle. Pigage advanced to second on another sacrifice bunt and later scored on a Lander throwing error. Gatewood, who reached on the error, crossed the plate after Powell delivered an RBI single up the middle.

Lander was held hitless until the fourth inning when Daisy Stewart (Roswell, Ga.) singled down the left field line. Stewart got as far as second base but Newberry's sound defense kept the Bearcats at bay.

The Bearcats threatened again in the fifth inning when Blair Hammonds (Abbeville, S.C.) drove a one-out double down the left field line. Lander bunted Hammonds over to third, but Newberry's defense bailed Huckestein out of the jam once again.

Lander produced two more baserunners over the course of the game but a double play and a pair of strikeouts were enough to solidify Newberry's 3-0 win.

Game Two: Lander 3, Newberry 0 - Box Score
The second game was a pitchers' duel as both Leisnner and Shelley Jeffcoat (Lexington, S.C.) offered splendid outings.

Both teams' bats were held silent until the top of the sixth inning when Natalie Smith (Hollywood, Fla.) started off the Bearcats with a one-out single. Smith advanced to third on a Newberry fielding error and scored after Adkins delivered a line-drive single.

Newberry produced just four baserunners and two hits in the game as they were held scoreless for the first time this season.

Leisnner pitched seven complete innings and struck out nine as she improved her record to 3-2 on the year.

Jeffcoat was tagged with the loss despite pitching five scoreless innings. She pitched six innings in total, allowing just four hits and striking out four.

Newberry returns to action with another home doubleheader on Tuesday, February 23, against Limestone. The first pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m.
