NEWBERRY - The Newberry College women's basketball team sailed its way to the easy victory as the Wolves put up a season high 92 points as they took down Allen University, 92-39.
Everybody who suited up for Newberry (4-2) saw double-digit minutes worth of playing time and four put in double-digit points including senior Helen McKinney (Owensboro, Ky.) who finished up the contest with a team high 22, her fourth straight 20-plus point game.
“It was another great defensive effort and we were fortunate enough to have the opportunity to get everybody in the game,” said Newberry head coach Sean Page. “We got our starters a lot of rest while getting some of our other kids some much needed experience.”
The Wolves started off sluggish, not scoring the first bucket of the game for either team until the 17 minute mark on a McKinney layup. The Yellow Jackets held a two point lead at the 13:24 mark until a McKinney jumper tied up the game followed quickly by two Brittany Brown (Fort Myers, Fla.) free throws that gave Newberry the lead for good with 12:19 left to go in the first half.
Brown finished the game with 14 points followed by Leeara Creet (Brisbane, Australia) and Devanee Taylor (Norfolk, Va.) who each had 10.
The Wolves once again outrebounded their opponent, grabbing 37 boards to the Yellow Jacket's 28. Newberry also capitalized on 30 Allen turnovers that they turned into 33 points.
“I'm happy to get another win,” added Page. “But now we have to get ready for a tough one on Saturday against Tusculum.”
Newberry will take on No. 23 Tusculum as the Wolves return to South Atlantic Conference play this Saturday, Dec. 4, at 4 p.m.
