HARTSVILLE, S.C. - Senior Tony Davis (Sarasota, Fla.) scored a career-high 29 points and made 14 consecutive free throws in the second half to lead the Newberry Wolves to a 102-85 victory over the Coker Cobras in Timberlake-Lawton Gymnasium on Tuesday night.

Newberry (5-4 overall) shot 53.8 percent (28-of-52) from the field in the game and outrebounded the Cobras 38-21 to take the win over Coker (2-6 overall). Also recording a career high for Newberry was freshman Brunes Charles (Naples, Fla.) with 15 points.

Despite the 17-point margin of victory, the win was not always assured, as the game was tied 38-all at the half. Newberry led by as many as 12 points in the opening period when a layup by Antoni Magdos (Knoxville, Tenn.) at the 11:14 mark pushed the lead to 23-11, but Coker battled back into the game and tied it up six minutes later to turn up the heat on the Wolves. By the time halftime rolled around, there had been seven ties and two lead changes.

The battle continued through the early stages of the second half, and Coker's Tom Wright tied the game with 6:01 to play at 73-all with a pair of free throws. The Wolves scored the next nine points in a row and never looked back. The run was capped by an emphatic dunk by Davis on an assist from Charles.

The Cobras tried to foul their way back into the game, but Newberry's best free throw shooting game of the season ensured a victory. The Wolves made 90.6 percent (29-of-32) of their free throws to hold on to the win.

Shamel Akins (Charlotte, N.C.) scored 18 points and grabbed four rebounds and Jawuan Lockhart (Washington, D.C.) rounded out Newberry's double digit scorers with 10 points, five assists and three rebounds.

The Wolves, who ranked fourth nationally in steals per game entering the game, were above even their lofty average in that category, snagging the ball 15 times, led by three apiece from Brandon Bostick (Florence, S.C.) and Charles Ndoloum (Ndjamena, Chad).

Newberry rounds out its fall semester action on Saturday at 4 p.m. as the Wolves visit the Lenoir-Rhyne Bears for a South Atlantic Conference tilt.
