NEWBERRY, S.C. - The No. 2 Newberry College wrestling team stayed unbeaten for the weekend in its fourth event at the Super Region I Duals, cruising past No. 12 West Liberty, 25-9.
Newberry (12-4) dropped only one decision en route to the victory over West Liberty (4-7), who entered the Duals ranked sixth in the region.
Matt Oliver (Toms River, N.J.) started Newberry off at 125 lbs. against Sean Jordan. Oliver scored two takedowns in the first period and added another and a reversal in the second to lead 8-4 heading into the third. From there, Oliver rode Jordan out and added a riding time point to take the match, 9-4, and to give Newberry a 3-0 lead.
At 133 lbs., Sheridan Moran (Lafayette, La.) faced Nick Wykoff. Moran put Wykoff into a hole early with a 4-1 first period lead before adding a takedown in the second period for a 6-2 advantage. In the final frame, Wykoff managed an escape but Moran never let the Hilltopper score an offensive point to come away with a Newberry win, 10-4. The win pushed Newberry's lead to 6-0.
Deral Brown (Elgin, S.C.) checked in for Newberry at 141 lbs. against Matt Cunningham. Brown got off to a fast start with a three-point near fall in the first period and never looked back, racking up takedowns in every period to earn a major decision, 13-4. The victory extended Newberry's advantage to 10-0.
At 149 lbs., Dale DeBacco Jr. (Niagara Falls, N.Y.) found himself in a battle against A.J. Gavin. Gavin found the scoreboard first with a takedown but DeBacco answered with a reversal, only to see Gavin escape. DeBacco took the lead with a takedown in the second period and shut out Gavin in the third to win, 5-4. That win kept up Newberry's roll as the scarlet and gray led, 13-0.
Latra Collick (Berlin, Md.) aimed to keep his Saturday perfect against Brian Leggett at 157 lbs. Collick scored on a reversal in the first period but trailed after one, 3-2. Another reversal and a Leggett escape brought the match even at 4-4 after two stanzas, but Leggett escaped and kept Collick off of the scoreboard. Luckily for Newberry, Collick earned a riding time point to force a sudden victory period where he took advantage with a takedown to win, 7-5, bumping up Newberry's lead to 16-0.
Dustin Harvey (Marietta, Ga.) once again represented Newberry at 165 lbs. against Derrick Williams. Harvey went on the offensive after a scoreless first period with two near falls to build a 4-1 edge heading into the final frame. Williams scored on a reversal in the third but that would be all the Hilltopper could muster as Harvey pulled away for an 8-3 victory. Harvey's win made the team score 19-0 in favor of Newberry.
At 174 lbs., Curtis Chenoweth (Clearwater, Kan.) faced Matt Littleton. Chenoweth built a one-point lead with a takedown and an escape after the first period but broke the match open in the second, scoring an escape, a reversal and a near fall for all the points he would need to win, 9-4. The match gave Newberry a commanding 22-0 lead.
Bryant Blanton (Summerville, S.C.) looked for his first win of the Duals against Brandon Neifeld at 184 lbs. Blanton opened the scoring with a takedown in the first period and held Neifeld at bay throughout the match. Blanton scored once more in the final frame with an escape from bottom position and completed the shutout, 3-0, to extend Newberry's lead to 25-0.
After a scarlet and gray forfeit at 197 lbs., the score stood 25-6 in favor of Newberry. Newcomer Eli Charles (Green Cove Springs, Fla.) made his first dual appearance for Newberry at the heavyweight level against J.D. Ramsey. Ramsey took advantage of a takedown in the first period and built his lead through two periods to lead going into the final stanza, 5-2. Charles escaped twice but Ramsey held the edge to win, 7-2, bringing the final team score to 25-9.
