JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. - The Newberry College men's basketball team fell behind early and was never able to rally in an 85-54 South Atlantic Conference loss at Carson-Newman College on Saturday.

Newberry (5-8, 0-2 SAC) was led in scoring by 10 points each from Danny Huffor (Marco Island, Fla.) and Ray Robinson (Jacksonville, Fla.).

Carson-Newman (6-5, 1-1 SAC) had five players in double figures led by 15 points off the bench from Quinche Dowdell (Oak Ridge, Tenn.).

The Eagles led for the entire game after a tight start to the contest. Carson-Newman went on a quick 13-3 run to extend the lead to double digits at the 12:52 mark of the first half with a 17-7 advantage. After a three-pointer by Huffor broke the run, Carson-Newman went on a 13-2 surge that pushed the lead to 30-12 with 8:21 left in the first half.

Carson-Newman was able to push the lead to as many as 24 points before the half was over, but a Coleman Young (Spartanburg, S.C.) three-pointer just before the buzzer made it a 44-23 halftime score. Newberry was limited to 8-of-24 (33.3%) shooting in the first half while the Eagles were a solid 17-of-29 (58.6%) from the field with six three-pointers.

The early stages of the second half were a back-and-forth affair but the Eagles were still able to edge ahead. The lead hit the 30-point mark with 11:36 to play at 63-33, but Newberry got it back down to 26 points on another Young three-pointer at the 7:18 mark.

Carson-Newman pushed on to lead by as many as 35 points, with late three-pointers by Jawuan Lockhart (Washington, D.C.) and Ryan Barnes (Oviedo, Fla.) making the final margin 85-54.

Overall, Newberry was 20-of-61 (32.8%) from the floor with the Eagles actually improving in the second half, shooting a total of 31-of-51 (60.8%) in the game. Newberry turned the ball over 16 times and was outrebounded by a 37-30 margin in the game.

The scarlet and gray will return home for two South Atlantic Conference games in Eleazer Arena next week, starting with a Wednesday night matchup against Mars Hill followed by a Saturday afternoon tilt against Lenoir-Rhyne.
