Newberry is bested by Carson-Newman in South Atlantic Conference competition

Box Score

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. - The Newberry College (9-7, 1-2 SAC) volleyball team completed their road stretch in Tennessee with a Saturday afternoon match at Carson-Newman (7-5, 1-1 SAC). Newberry shined at times but fell 3-1 for the second night in a row.

Newberry got off on the right foot with a 25-21 victory in the opening set, but were unable to keep the Eagles at bay for the rest of the match. Carson-Newman won the next three sets by scores of 25-22, 25-16 and 31-29 to take the match.

The teams played most of the first set equally. The score remained close but Newberry used several runs to hold the lead. Newberry never held a large lead but never trailed either and eventually used a pair of kills by Lorena Maia (Belo Horizonte, Brazil) to complete the win.

The second set played out similarly to the first, but this time Carson-Newman won the key points late in the set. Rachael Bowlin (Morristown, Tenn.) recorded 3 kills in the last 5 points for the Eagles and evened the match at a set apiece.

The third set saw Carson-Newman jump out to an early lead before Maia's services pulled Newberry back into it. With Newberry on the verge of tying the score, the Eagles won eight consecutive points to renew their sizeable lead. Newberry won a few more points down the stretch, but Carson-Newman's lead was too great and the Eagles came up with the win.

Newberry jumped out to an early lead in the fourth set with the service of Fernanda Frey (Sao Paulo, Brazil). The match drew closer down the stretch and Newberry was unable to convert on four different set-point opportunities. The Eagles managed a pair of late kills and claimed the fourth and final set.

The bright spot in the match came from a record-setting service ace by Maia. The senior's ace was the 213th of her career, which surpassed a 12-year-old record set by Tammy Buckles back in 1997.

Kember Lichtie (Amarillo, Texas) and Frey continued to play well for Newberry. Lichtie recorded her third double-double in as many matches, this time with 11 kills and 12 digs. Frey earned her second consecutive double-double with a team leading 15 kills and 11 digs. Brianna Blakely (Houston, Texas) also achieved a double-double of her own with 20 assists and 14 digs.

Newberry returns home for a pair of SAC matches next week. The scarlet and gray will play its home opener against Mars Hill on Friday, September 25, followed by Tusculum on Saturday, September 26.
