Box Score 2 NEWBERRY, S.C. - In the regular season finale, Newberry College defeated Lincoln Memorial, 3-2 and 8-0, to sweep the Railsplitters and finish the regular season at 29-14 and 10-6 in the South Atlantic Conference.
Picking up the victories for Newberry were Kristen Hicks (Bamberg, S.C.) and Amanda Huckestein (Port Charlotte, Fla.), who combined to hold LMU to only six hits in the doubleheader.
Game One: Newberry 3, Lincoln Memorial 2 - Box Score
The scarlet and gray took the opening game against the Railsplitters by scoring in the bottom of the sixth inning breaking a 2-2 tie. Hicks garnered her 11th victory as she had a no-hitter through 3.1 innings, while allowing only three hits and one earned run.
LMU took the lead first in the second inning as Ashley Knight scored after a throwing error from Courtney Flach (Tampa, Fla.) allowed Sammy Jo Garrett to reach base.
However, Newberry struck back in the bottom of the inning with two runs to take a 2-1 lead. Angela Cataldo (Sumter, S.C.) started off the inning as she singled to the shortstop and was then pinch-ran for by Jessica Teague (Charlotte, N.C.).
A fielding error on a Whitney Wiles (Iva, S.C.) bunt advanced Wiles to the third base and brought home Teague to give Newberry its first run of the game. Flach drove in Wiles with a sacrifice fly to left-center field to give Newberry the lead.
LMU tied the game at two in the fourth inning as Bridget Eicher grounded out to first base, which scored Knight from third base, who reached base on a fielder's choice.
In the sixth inning, Newberry regained the lead as Amy Jarrell (Dover, Del.) drove in Wiles on a two-out single up the middle.
Hicks shut the door on the Railsplitters in the top of the seventh to give Newberry the opening game victory.
Leading Newberry in hitting in game one was Wiles, who was 2-for-3 in the game with two singles.
Game Two: Newberry 8, Lincoln Memorial 0 (5 inn.) - Box Score
Newberry's offense was explosive early in game two as Newberry dropped six runs in the opening inning to derail the Railsplitters' attempt to share the doubleheader. Huckestein took the victory for Newberry as she allowed only three hits in the 8-0 Newberry victory.
Sara Powell (Ocean View, Del.) had the first hit for Newberry in the six-run first inning as she singled to the pitcher. Powell advanced to second as Kat Hammond (Irmo, S.C.) singled to left field.
The next batter, Huckestein, drove in Powell with a single through the left side to give NC the 1-0 lead. Two batters later, Christine Stokes (Charleston, S.C.) knocked a three-run homerun over the left field fence to increase Newberry's lead to 4-0.
The scoring didn't stop there as Jarrell drove in two more runs in the inning off a double down the left field line, which brought in Flach and Amanda Schumacher (Greenville, S.C.).
The scarlet and gray added two more runs in the game to get a run-rule victory over the Railsplitters in the fifth inning as they held an 8-0 lead.
Huckestein pitched another gem as she garnered her eighth shutout of the season, which moved her season record to 18-4. She struck out five batters in the game as she increased her season total to 161.
Leading Newberry in hits in the game was Stokes and Jarrell as the duo both had two hits in the game as well as three RBIs apiece.
Newberry now advances to the South Atlantic Conference Tournament on the campus of Lenoir-Rhyne, where the scarlet and gray are likely to face Catawba College in the opening round. Official pairings and seeds will be announced by SAC officials later in the day or on Monday morning.
