Softball goes 1-2 on day one of FMU Invitational

FLORENCE, S.C. - The Newberry College softball team went 1-2 on their first day of the Francis Marion Invitational. The scarlet and gray won the first game, but fell in their two following games.

In game one, Newberry defeated Edinboro University, 8-3, as the scarlet and gray moved to 16-1 on the year. The pitching duo of Kristen Hicks (Bamberg, S.C.) and Amanda Huckestein (Port Charlotte, Fla.) both tossed in the game with Hicks picking up the victory and improving her season record to 8-1.

Newberry fell to Slippery Rock in game two by a 8-0 decision as Huckestein picked up the loss and dropped her first decision of the season moving her record to 8-1.

In the day's final game against Queens University of Charlotte, Newberry was defeated by the Royals, 4-2. Newberry's only runs in the game came from a Kat Hammond (Irmo, S.C.) two-run homerun. Hicks picked up the loss in game two, which dropped her record to 8-2.

The scarlet and gray square off tomorrow against Saint Leo University at 11 a.m. followed by a showdown with No. 4 Francis Marion University Patriots at 1 p.m.
