Box Score 2 NEWBERRY, S.C. - The Newberry College softball team split the doubleheader with Chowan University Hawks today, 2-3 and 3-1. Newberry now stands at 15-1 on the season as the opening game loss served as it the first for the scarlet and gray.
Kristen Hicks (Bamberg, S.C.) suffered her first loss of the season in game one and Amanda Huckestein (Port Charlotte, Fla.) moved to 8-0 with her game two victory.
Huckestein and Amy Jarrell (Dover, Del.) led Newberry in hits as the duo had three hits apiece with Huckestein having one RBI.
Game One: Newberry 2, Chowan 3 - Box Score
Newberry led for the majority of the game as they scored two runs to open the game, but a flurry of three runs in fifth inning gave the Hawks the 3-2 victory.
The first run of the game was scored when Sara Powell (Ocean View, Del.) doubled to centerfield bringing in Kat Hammond (Irmo, S.C.), who reached on a walk. Powell crossed the plate as the next batter, Huckestein, singled to the shortstop scoring Powell to give Newberry the early 2-0 lead.
Chowan took the lead in the fifth as Mindy Byrd hit a three-run homerun scoring Allie Hunka and Kaytee McLaughlin. The 3-2 lead was enough for the Hawks to hang on for the victory in the opening game.
Hicks was dealt the loss as her record dropped to 7-1 on the year. She allowed two earned runs on five hits, while striking out six batters.
Game Two: Newberry 3, Chowan 1 - Box Score
Game two was as exciting as the preceding one as Newberry came from behind to reclaim the lead in the sixth inning to win their fifteenth game of the season. Huckestein picked up her eighth victory of the season as Jessica Reid (Walhalla, S.C.) drove in the game-winning run.
Once again, Newberry garnered the first lead picking up a run in the third inning. Aissa Gatewood (N. Charleston, S.C.) led off the inning with a bunt single and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Powell.
Gatewood and Hammond, who reached on a walk, then advanced to second and third by a Huckestein sacrifice. Gatewood then scored off a wild pitch by Chowan's Allie Kolezynski.
Chowan tied the game in the fifth inning as Tricia Gorman doubled to left center scoring Kolezynski, who reached on a single.
The scarlet and gray were not to be deterred as they posted two runs in the sixth inning to regain the lead at 3-1.
Reid's single over the third baseman's head scored Huckestein giving Newberry the 2-1 advantage. Newberry added an insurance run as Stephanie Blazer (Greenville, S.C.) scored on an error from third baseman Jenna Lassiter.
Gaining the victory for Newberry was Huckestein, who struck out nine batters and only allowed one earned run on five hits.
Newberry now travels to Florence, S.C. for the Francis Marion Patriots Invitational, where they will battle five teams in two days; Edinboro, Slippery Rock, Queens University, Saint Leo University and the host school Francis Marion. The scarlet and gray will play three games on Saturday and two on Sunday.
