Box Score 2 Hartsville, S.C. - The Newberry College softball team extended their winning streak to six with a doubleheader sweep of Coker College, 7-2 and 9-2.
Amanda Huckestein (Port Charlotte, Fla.) and Kristen Hicks (Bamberg, S.C.) continued their dominating ways on the mound as the duo combined to only allow two earned runs in the doubleheader as both claimed victories on the day. Huckestein, the reigning South Atlantic Conference Pitcher of the Week, pitched in both games as she improved her record to 3-0 on the season.
Game One: Newberry 7, Coker 2
After allowing two runs in the first three innings, Newberry exploded for five runs on seven hits in the top of the fourth inning. The scarlet and gray started off the inning with a Whitney Wiles (Iva, S.C.) single to centerfield followed by a stolen base by Wiles. Kat Hammond (Irmo, S.C.) advanced Wiles to third on a single to right field.
Sara Powell (Ocean View, Del.) knocked in the first run of the game for Newberry with her single to right center. Huckestein followed with a bunt single that loaded the bases for Tiffany Pigage (Lexington, S.C.), who doubled to left field scoring three runs and giving Newberry a 4-2 lead.
The scarlet and gray tacked on another run as Amy Jarrell's (Dover, Del.) single with two outs scored Pigage, who advanced to third after a sacrifice fly.
Hicks struck out two batters in the bottom of the fourth along with a foul out to secure a quick bottom inning, but would come out in the fifth inning after giving up to walks to open the inning. Huckestein came into the game for relief and following another walk to load the bases struck out two batters and popped up another out to end the inning without giving up any runs.
The Lady Cobras would load the bases again the following inning, but were unable to score any runs as they stranded three more runners.
Newberry added two insurance runs in the seventh inning to give Newberry a 7-2 lead, which they held on to as they moved to 5-0 on the year.
In the game, Newberry had 13 hits compared to Coker's four as the Lady Cobras fell to 4-4 on the year.
Jarrell and Pigage both had three RBIs on the day with their 2-for-3 and 1-for-3 respective performances. Hicks pushed her record to 3-0 on the year as she allowed her first earned run of the season after having two shutouts to start the season. Shelly Catlett (Orangeburg, SC) (2-2) took the loss for Coker, allowing five runs on nine hits with four strikeouts in five innings.

Game Two: Newberry 9, Coker 2
Newberry led throughout game two as they scored three runs in the opening inning as Aissa Gatewood reached on a lead off bunt single and after advancing to second on sacrifice bunt scored off a Kat Hammond homerun to centerfield.
Succeeding Hammond, Sara Powell doubled to left field and scored on a Amanda Huckestein single to up the middle to give Newberry the early 3-0 lead.
Coker loaded the bases in the bottom of the first but to no avail as they stranded all three runners.
Newberry wasted no time adding to their lead in the second inning as they scored two more runs to garner a 5-0 lead. Hammond brought in two more runs with a two-RBI double to rightfield that scored Gatewood and Amy Jarrell.
Coker managed to get one run back in the bottom of the second, but Newberry tacked on another run in the fourth for a 6-1 lead.
Whitney Wallett (Shermans Dale, Pa.) gave Coker their second run of the game with a solo homer in the sixth to narrow Newberry's lead to 6-2.
The scarlet and gray once again scored late-inning runs to cushion their lead as Newberry put on three runs in top-seven for a 9-2 lead.
Huckestein improved her record to 3-0 on the year with her complete game nine-strikeout performance that included only one earned run. Becky Dillon (West Palm Beach, Fla.) took the loss for Coker allowing five runs on seven hits in three innings of work.
The scarlet and gray compiled 15 hits, which included Hammond's 3-for-4 performance with a homerun, four RBIs and a run scored, while Huckestein was also 3-for-4 with an RBI. Gatewood, Jarrell and Stephanie Blazer (Greenville, S.C.) each picked up a pair of hits.
Newberry returns to action this Thursday in a doubleheader against North Greenville, which is set to start at 2 p.m.
