Newberry breezes past Morris, 96-49

NEWBERRY - Newberry College hosted Morris College in women's basketball action on Saturday afternoon in the middle game of their three-game home stand. Newberry dominated virtually every phase of the game as they cruised to a lopsided 96-49 victory.

Newberry (4-1) exploded out of the gate, posting 16 of the game's first 18 points. Newberry kept Morris' shooters at bay, as the Lady Saints only managed 7 field goals in the opening half. By the time the media timeout was called with 9:49 to play in the first half, Newberry had stretched the lead to 29-10.

The second portion of the first half played almost identically to the first, this time with Newberry outscoring Morris 28-10 in order to take a 57-20 lead into the locker room.

The second half proved to be a little friendlier for the Lady Hornets, but they were still outscored and never got any closer to catching the scarlet and gray.

Newberry led comfortably for the rest of the game as they quickly stretched the lead early in the second half. After that, Morris never managed to get the differential back within 40 points.

Newberry got contributions out of several players, as 11 total players recorded points for the scarlet and gray.

The Browne sisters led the way in poitns for Newberry, as Amy Browne (Maroochydore, Australia) had 17 and Courtney Browne (Maroochydore, Australia) had 16.

Just behind the Browne sisters in points were Helen McKinney (Owensboro, Ky.) and Anita Bulcher (Russia, Ohio). They both recorded double-doubles on the evening, as McKinney had 15 points and 10 rebounds while Bulcher had 13 points and 15 rebounds.

Jessica Bearzatto (Melbourne, Australia) had a well-rounded day and contributed in various ways with 6 points, 6 rebounds and 5 assists. Leanne Watson (Stone Mountain, Ga.) ended her night with 8 points and Newberry's second-highest 11 rebounds.

Defensively, Newberry managed to hold the Lady Hornets to just 25.4% (16-63) from the field for the entire game. The scarlet and gray blocked three shots and forced Morris to turn the ball over 15 times.

The scarlet and gray will stay at home to face off another NAIA opponent in Voorhees on Tuesday, December 1. The game will start at 6 p.m. in Eleazer Arena and be Newberry's final home game before hitting the road to open conference play at Wingate.
