Box Score ANDERSON - The Newberry College women's soccer team took advantage of three goals in the second half to bury the Anderson University Trojans in a midweek nonconference matchup, 4-1.
Newberry (9-3-1, 3-1-1 SAC) broke out of a 1-1 tie at halftime to put Anderson (3-8-0) away. Newberry led Anderson in shots with a 16 to eight advantage, and corner kicks, 12 to two.
Amberly Fowler (Greenville, S.C.) scored two goals for the scarlet and gray and Jesse Langdon (Raleigh, N.C.) and Michaela Peach (Tadcaster, North Yorkshire, England) each added one to give Newberry the win.
Newberry goalkeeper Emily Rhoades (Buckley, Wash.) made four saves in the contest, improving her record to 9-3-1.
Newberry wasted little time getting on the scoreboard. Amberly Fowler took a Sara Geisman (Middleburg Heights, Ohio) pass in the match's third minute and found the back of the net to put Newberry ahead early, 1-0.
Anderson would find its equalizer shortly before halftime, however. Joelle Purinton scored in the 42nd minute to pull the Trojans even, 1-1. The teams would enter the halftime break with the same score.
The beginning of the second half bore a striking resemblance to the first, as both featured a quick Amberly Fowler score. The junior midfielder took a shot two minutes into the second half that passed Anderson goalkeeper Alyssa Stephens and gave Newberry the lead, 2-1. Fowler's two goals in the match give her the team lead for the season at five.
Newberry would not be content to sit on the one-goal margin, netting two more goals in the match. Michaela Peach knocked in her fourth goal of the season in the 73rd minute to push the Newberry lead to 3-1 and Jesse Langdon followed with a score in the 83rd minute to make the match 4-1 in favor of the scarlet and gray.
Newberry took 11 shots on goal in the match. Katie Sas (Columbia, S.C.) led the scarlet and gray in total shots with four and Ashley Reetz (Summerville, S.C.) led the team in shots on goal with three.
Newberry returns to South Atlantic Conference play in its next match on Tuesday, October 13 when the team travels to Lincoln Memorial University. Kickoff is slated for 3 p.m.
