Box Score GREENWOOD, S.C. – The Newberry College women's soccer team turned in a strong defensive effort Wednesday night but came up just short in a 1-0 loss to nationally-ranked Lander University at Van Taylor Stadium.

The Wolves held the undefeated Bearcats scoreless through the opening 60 minutes before Lander broke through on a penalty kick in the 62nd minute.

Newberry's defense stood firm throughout the contest, limiting a potent Lander attack and receiving a solid performance between the posts. The Wolves' goalkeeper recorded six saves as Newberry kept the nationally-ranked Bearcats off the scoreboard for the entire first half.

Newberry's physical play was evident as the Wolves recorded 10 fouls while continuing to challenge one of the region's top programs until the final whistle.

Newberry returns to South Atlantic Conference action on Saturday, Sept. 19, when the Wolves host Lincoln Memorial University at 2 p.m. at the Smith Road Complex.

While the result did not fall in Newberry's favor, the Wolves can take confidence from a spirited performance against a nationally-ranked opponent. If Wednesday night's effort is any indication, Newberry will be well-prepared as they return to conference play looking to build momentum and earn a key SAC victory on their home field.
