Box Score HARROGATE, Tenn. - The Newberry College women's soccer team wrapped up the road portion of its season schedule in style, shutting out South Atlantic Conference foe Lincoln Memorial University, 1-0.
Newberry (10-3-1, 4-1-1 SAC) took advantage of goalkeeper Emily Rhoades' (Buckley, Wash.) eighth shutout of the season and a second half goal to top Lincoln Memorial (5-6-2, 1-3-0 SAC).
Newberry tied Lincoln Memorial in shots with four but edged the Railsplitters in shots on goal, tallying five shots on goal to Lincoln Memorial's four.
Emily Rhoades made four saves for the clean sheet. Rhoades' eighth shutout of the season gives her 13 for her career, tying her with Bobby Gainey atop the career list at Newberry. Rhoades broke the single-season shutout record when she earned her sixth of the season against Wingate on September 20.
The scarlet and gray scored on a shot from Cassie Smith (Lyman, S.C.) in the 66th minute to put Newberry on top, 1-0. The long range shot deflected off of a Lincoln Memorial defender and passed Lincoln Memorial goalkeeper Sarah Thompson. Officials credited the score as an own goal, though the goal would have been the first of Smith's collegiate career.
Smith has played every minute of every match so far, a feat shared with only Sara Geisman (Middleburg Heights, Ohio).
The first half saw Newberry put together some chances but finish the period without a score. Newberry led Lincoln Memorial in shots at the end of the first half, with a six to four advantage. The scarlet and gray tallied the only shots on goal in the half, with one each coming from Ashley Reetz (Summerville, S.C.) and Meagan Heney (Ajax, Ontario, Canada) shortly before the halftime break. The teams entered halftime tied, 0-0.
Lincoln Memorial upped its offensive chances in the second half, but only Newberry found the back of the net with the goal from Smith.
Lora Moore (Raleigh, N.C.) and Michaela Peach (Tadcaster, North Yorkshire, England) tallied two of Newberry's three shots on goal in the second half. Rhoades made all four of her saves in the second stanza to preserve the shutout and wrap up the win.
Katie Sas (Columbia, S.C.), Michaela Peach and Megan Douglas (Bradford, West Yorkshire, England) each received a yellow card for Newberry in the match. Samantha Meek earned Lincoln Memorial's only caution.
Newberry will return home for a five-game homestand to wrap up the season, beginning by hosting Lenoir-Rhyne on Saturday, October 17. Kickoff is slated for 2 p.m.
