LAURINBURG, N.C. - The second ranked Newberry College wrestling team claimed their third win at the East Coast Duals by defeating No. 16 Shippensburg University, 29-12. The victory improved Newberry's record to 18-2 as the scarlet and gray won seven of ten matches in the dual.
The victory gave Newberry its eleventh victory over a nationally ranked Division II opponent this year. The scarlet and gray's win also set a program record for the most wins in a season bypassing the 2006-07 squad that won seventeen matches.
In the 125 pound match, Matt Oliver (Toms River, N.J.) won by injury default over Justin Morris, who was unable to continue after suffering an injury at 0:54 mark. The default gave Oliver his twentieth victory of the season and the fiftieth of his career.
Sheridan Moran (Lafayette, La.) pushed Newberry's lead to 10-0 as he scored a 13-5 major decision over Andrew Jones in the 133 pound match. Moran scored six points in the opening period and five in the final period to secure his twentieth victory of the season. The major also served as Moran's fifth major this year.
Tony Washington (Georgetown, S.C.) won his third match of the East Coast Duals by defeating Tom Wiechelt with a 10-4 decision. Washington scored four takedowns in the match compared to none for Wiechelt. The victory improved Washington's record to 16-6 on the season.
At 149 lbs., Latra Collick (Berlin, Md.) defeated Nate Nauroth in overtime with a 7-5 sudden victory. Collick scored a takedown in the extra period to defeat Nauroth, the fourth ranked wrestler in the East Region at 149 lbs. The sudden victory improved Collick's record to 20-5 and also served as his sixtieth career victory.
Sean Byrnes (Jackson, N.J.) lost in the 157 lbs. match to David Sunderland by disqualification at the 2:23 mark. Byrnes performed an illegal move, which resulted in a Sunderland injury from which he could not continue from. The loss dropped Byrnes' record to 14-8 on the season.
Vin Salek (Toms River, N.J.) competed in his first match at the East Coast Duals and defeated Jake Wilson by a 12-1 major decision. Salek scored four takedowns in the match and held a 5:19 advantage in riding time. The triumph was Salek's thirteenth of the year and his first major decision.
At 174 lbs., Josh Whitelock (Rhodesdale, Md.) lost to Chris Barrick by a 10-3 decision. Barrick scored six points in the opening period after Whitelock opened with the initial takedown. The loss dropped Whitelock's season record to 15-8.
In the 184 pound match, Bryant Blanton (Summerville, S.C.) competed against Jon Hade and the match would need two extra periods before Hade came away with the 3-2 sudden victory. Hade, No. 4 in the East Region at 184 lbs., scored an escape in the second overtime to give him the victory.
Keeno Griffin (Jacksonville, Fla.) secured the victory for Newberry as he defeated Taylor Knight with a 6-2 decision. Griffin scored two points in the first period and four in the final period to lock up the victory and improve his season record to 21-2.
At 285 lbs., Cy Wainwright (Green Cove Spring, Fla.) was winning 6-2, when his competitor, Brandon Miller, was no longer able to compete. The injury default at 2:55 gave Wainwright his twenty-fourth victory of the season and extended his winning streak to twenty-six.
No. 2 Newberry's final match of the East Coast Duals is against No. 18 Kutztown at 2 p.m.
