ANDERSON - Only two words can describe the second half of the Newberry College men's soccer loss to Anderson University; excitement and confusion.

Newberry was defeated, 4-3, by the Trojans by a second half explosion by Anderson as the hosts scored four goals to overwhelm the Newberry defense. Newberry countered Anderson's four goals with two of its own in the second half but to no avail.

Newberry lead at halftime, 1-0, as senior forward Kwame Gyamfi (Accra, Ghana) scored on a through ball from fellow senior forward Debola Ogunseye (Lagos, Nigeria). Gyamfi carefully chipped the ball over the keeper and it landed in the far corner to give the scarlet and gray the early lead in the 13th minute.

The second half started with a bang for Newberry as Ogunseye scored within 45 seconds to up the lead to 2-0. In the 58th minute the game seemed it was in Newberry's hand as Anderson's Stephon Henry (Kingston, Jamaica) tackled freshman midfielder Trey Boyd (Victoria, Texas) on a breakaway and was given a red card and sent off the field.

Playing a man down Anderson seemed to be revitalized after the red card and it showed as the Trojans' Lasse Shorweide scored in the 70th minute. Shorweide received a long pass from defender Zach Denson (Atlanta, Ga.) and curled the ball into the far post past senior goalkeeper Will Dieterich (Tampa, Fla.).

Boyd answered Anderson's charge with a goal of his own in the 82nd minute as he received a cross from Ogunseye for a wide open net and he put the scarlet and gray up 3-1 with eight minutes to play.

However, an inspired Trojan offense would dominate the final eight minutes as Anderson scored three goals within the remaining time.

Anderson's sophomore forward Paul Passino (Belo Horizonte, Brazil) dribbled through the defense and slid the ball past Dieterich to pull the Trojans within a goal in the 82nd minute. Passino struck again a minute later as he received another pass from Denson, this time off a corner, and his header knotted the game at 3-all.

The decisive goal would be struck by Anderson's Kevin Falkenburg in the 87th minute as he placed the ball far post to give the Trojans the home victory and send Newberry home with a loss.

The game was extremely physical as five cautions and one ejection were issued throughout the match. Newberry's Boyd, Shane Abbott (Myrtle Beach, S.C.) and Kyle Murphy (Surfside Beach, S.C.) all received cautions.

Controversial officiating plagued the second half as several times both coaches argued the same call. On one occasion Anderson scored a goal on a free kick, but the goal was disallowed by the referee because Anderson didn't wait for the referee to continue play.

Newberry will look to earn its first win of the season as NC takes on the Limestone College Saints at home on Tuesday, Sept. 3, at 4 p.m.
