WINGATE, N.C. – Newberry College was swept by Wingate University in South Atlantic Conference softball doubleheader action Wednesday afternoon. The Lady Indians lost by a score of 5-0 in Game One and 3-0 in Game Two.

Newberry falls to 19-21 overall and 3-8 in the SAC while Wingate improved to 28-14 overall and 8-4 in the SAC.

GAME 1: Wingate 5, Newberry 0
 Wingate's Brittany Blankenship threw a complete game five-hitter as she shutout the Lady Indians on way to a 5-0 win.

Courtney Wagner went 2-for-3 with an RBI and two runs scored for the Bulldogs.

Jesse Groves (Suwanee, Ga.) picked up the loss after giving up two earned runs off ten hits in 5.2 innings.

GAME 2: Wingate 3, Newberry 0
 In Game Two, the Lady Indians were held to just one hit as Wingate completed the two-game sweep.

The game was tied 0-0 until the bottom of the sixth inning when the Bulldogs scored three runs. Wingate’s Leyila Myers hit an RBI single and Gina Ager followed with double to drive in the final two runs of the game.

Katelin Edwards (Greer, S.C.) pitched another strong game for the Lady Indians, but the freshman was charged with her 14th loss of the season. Edwards went the full six innings for her 16th complete game of the season. She allowed five hits and no earned runs while striking out six.

Blankenship threw a complete game one hitter to win her second game of the day and her 17th of the year.

The Lady Indians return to action on Saturday, April 12, when they host Carson-Newman College in the final home doubleheader of the year. The doubleheader will also serve as Newberry’s senior day as the Lady Indians will honor senior Ashley Marine (Peachtree City, Ga.).
