HARROGATE, Tenn. – Sara Powell went 4-for-8 with four RBIs and three runs scored as Newberry College split its doubleheader against Lincoln Memorial University in South Atlantic Conference action Sunday afternoon.

The Lady Indians won Game One, 8-5, before falling by a score of 9-6 in Game Two.

GAME ONE: Newberry 8, Lincoln Memorial 5
The Lady Indians scored five runs in the top of the fourth inning to secure their third South Atlantic Conference win of the season.

Newberry jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning as Kat Hammond (Irmo, S.C.) reached on a fielder’s choice and Ashley Marine (Peachtree City, Ga.) reached on an error by the Railsplitters’ third baseman. Jesse Groves (Suwanee, Ga.) and Richelle Mirabal (Tampa, Fla.) then hit back-to-back RBI singles to drive in the two runs.

The Lady Indians increased their lead to 3-0 when Sara Powell (Ocean View, Del.) drove in Aissa Gatewood (N. Charleston, S.C.) with an RBI double.

The Railsplitters pulled to within one in the bottom of the third as they scored two runs off back to back RBI groundouts.

In the top of the fourth Hayden Kidd (Gaffney, S.C.), Amy Jarrell (Dover, Del.) and Gatewood all reached to load the bases. Powell drove in the first run of the inning with an RBI single which kept the bases loaded.

Hammond followed Powell with a double to drive in two. After a Marine sacrifice fly increased the Lady Indians' lead to 7-2, Groves finished the scoring with an RBI double.

Lincoln Memorial managed to score three runs in the final four innings but the team was unable to maintain a rally long enough to catch Newberry.

Katelin Edwards (Greer, S.C.) earned the win for Newberry with her 14th complete game of the year.

GAME 2: Lincoln Memorial 9, Newberry 6
Newberry jumped out to a 4-2 lead but Lincoln Memorial scored seven runs in the final three innings to earn the split of the doubleheader.

Lincoln Memorial took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning with two RBI singles.

Newberry responded with three runs in the top of the second. Mirabal and Chelsea Chippoletti (Brookesville, Fla.) reached on back to back singles to start the inning and Jarrell drove in the first run of the game for the Lady Indians with an RBI off a throwing error by the third baseman.

After a Gatewood pop-out, Powell hit a single down the line to score the final two runs of the inning.

In the top of the third, Chipoletti drove in Marine to increase Newberry’s lead to 4-2. The freshman connected on an RBI single to drive in Marine who reached on a leadoff double.

The lead was short lived though as Lincoln Memorial scored seven runs in its final three innings.

Newberry managed to score two runs in the top of the sixth to briefly tie the game at 6-6 as Marine and Groves had back-to-back RBI. But three runs in the bottom of the inning by the Railsplitters sealed the Lady Indians fate.

Edwards was charged with the loss after allowing five earned runs in 2.1 innings of relief.

The Lady Indians next action takes place on Monday, April 7, when they return home to take on Catawba College in South Atlantic Conference doubleheader action. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.
