HICKORY, N.C. – Newberry College was swept by No. 25 Lenoir-Rhyne College in South Atlantic Conference softball doubleheader action Wednesday afternoon. The Lady Indians lost the first game, 3-2, before dropping a 7-3 decision in Game Two.

The Lady Indians fall to 18-16 overall, 2-3 in the SAC while the Bears improve to 31-10 overall, 6-2 in the SAC.

GAME 1: Lenoir-Rhyne 3, Newberry 2 (8 innings)
 Richelle Mirabal (Tampa, Fla.) and Chelsie Hilbourn (Loris, S.C.) each drove in a run as the Lady Indians tied the game, 2-2, in the top of the sixth inning to send the game into extra innings.

Down two, Amy Jarrell (Dover, Del.) started the sixth with a single. A bunt single by Aissa Gatewood (N. Charleston, S.C.) then put runners at the corners with no outs. After back to back strikeouts by Sara Powell (Ocean View, Del.) and Kat Hammond (Irmo, S.C.), Ashley Marine (Peachtree City, Ga.) was hit by a pitch to load the bases.

Hilbourn pinch hit for Jesse Groves (Suwanee, Ga.) and was also hit by a pitch to drive in Newberry’s first run. Mirabal then hit a single to drive in Gatewood. With the game tied and the bases still loaded Jessica Teague (Charlotte, N.C.) struck out to end the threat.

In the eighth inning, Karie Pushard hit an RBI single to give Lenoir-Rhyne the win.

Katelin Edwards (Greer, S.C.) went eight innings and allowed just two earned runs as she picked up the loss, her tenth of the year.

GAME 2: Lenoir-Rhyne 7, Newberry 3
 The Lady Indians racked up ten hits in Game Two but could only push across three runs as they lost 7-3.

Hammond led the way for the Lady Indians, going 3-for-4 with two RBIs and a run scored. Powell went 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored.

Groves picked up the loss for the Lady Indians, allowing three earned runs in 2.2 innings.

Meredith O'Connor picked up her second complete game victory of the day for the Bears, as the Lenoir-Rhyne ace went seven innings going seven innings and allowed three earned runs.

The Lady Indians return to action tomorrow when they face Brevard College in doubleheader action. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
