Box Score 4 FLORENCE, S.C. – Newberry College Lady Indians closed their weekend at the Patriot Invitational with a 10-8 win over Belmont Abbey College after losses to Fairmont State University, No. 18 Francis Marion University and No. 3 Georgia College and State University.
Sara Powell (Ocean View, Del.) led the Lady Indians throughout the weekend going 6-for-12 with two doubles and three RBI. Kat Hammond (Irmo, S.C.) and Jesse Groves (Suwanee, Ga.) each hit homeruns for Newberry.
In the first game of the weekend, Newberry fell to Fairmont State University, 3-2.
Chelsie Hilbourn (Loris, S.C.) and Katelin Edwards (Greer, S.C.) recorded the Lady Indians two RBIs in the game.
Edwards picked up the loss despite allowing no earned runs in her six inning complete game.
In the second game, Newberry fell to No. 18 Francis Marion University, 11-6.
Groves led the way for the Lady Indians, going 3-for-4 with her first career homerun and three RBI while Hammond notched her fourth homer of the year.
Hicks was tagged with her first loss of the season after allowing six earned runs in three innings innings.
The Lady Indians lost a close 3-0 game to No. 3 Georgia College and State in their third game of the weekend.
Newberry trailed just 1-0 heading into the seventh inning but the Lady Indians were unable to convert any of their numerous scoring chances.
Edwards, who was hit with the loss, struck out seven in seven innings of work.
Newberry picked up its lone win of the weekend in its final game as it defeated Belmont Abbey, 10-8.
Powell went 3-for-3 with three RBIs and two runs scored while Kristen Hicks (Bamberg, S.C.) helped her own effort with three RBIs.
Hicks improved to 7-1 on the season while notching seven strikeouts in the game.
The Lady Indians return home on Monday, March 10, when they will host USC Aiken in doubleheader action. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m.
