NEWBERRY, S.C. – Newberry College scored eight runs in the second inning of Game 2 to win 8-2 and split its doubleheader against Limestone College.

GAME 1: Limestone 7, Newberry 4
 Newberry entered the seventh inning with a 3-1 lead, but Kristen Hicks (Bamberg, S.C.) was unable to hold the lead allowing six runs including four on a two-out grand slam by the Saints’ Jordan Goodman.

The Lady Indians took a 1-0 lead in the fourth as they loaded the bases with three singles. A Sara Powell (Ocean View, Del.) single up the middle scored Jessica Teague (Charlotte, N.C.) and gave Newberry a 1-0 lead.

One inning later the Lady Indians added two more runs to their score as McKenzie Phillips (Wallace, N.C.) and Teague got on base ahead of Amy Jarrell (Dover, Del.). Jarrell hit a two-RBI double which drove in both Ashley Marine (Peachtree City, Ga.), who pinch ran for Phillips, and Teague.

The Saints posed a solid threat in the sixth scoring one run and loading the bases but Hicks entered the game in relief and struck out two Limestone batters to get out of the jam.

Newberry seemed to be in control of the game as the Lady Indians had a 6-0 record when leading after six innings.

In the top of the seventh, the Saints loaded the bases with two singles and a walk. A third single and a HBP tied the game at three before Goodman put the Limestone up for good with a drive over the left field fence.

Newberry got one run back on a Richelle Mirabal (Tampa, Fla.) single, a Chelsea Chipoletti (Brooksville, Fla.) sacrifice bunt and a Jarrell single, but the Lady Indians were unable to get anymore as Aissa Gatewood (N. Charleston, S.C.) grounded out to second to end the game.

Hicks was charged with her third loss of the season after allowing six earned runs in the seventh inning.

Lauren Robertson got the win in relief after going two innings and allowing just one run.

Jesse Groves (Suwanee, Ga.) pitched well for the Lady Indians going 5 1/3 innings and allowing just one earned run, but the freshman was denied her first career win by the Saints’ seventh inning rally.

GAME 2: Newberry 8, Limestone 2
 An eight run second inning was all that the Lady Indians would need as freshman Katelin Edwards (Greer, S.C.) had her second straight strong outing holding the Saints to just two earned runs in seven innings.

The 8-2 win bumped the Lady Indians record to 12-10.

The Newberry rally in the second inning started with a single by Groves After a sac bunt by Marine moved Groves to second, Hayden Kidd (Gaffney, S.C.) hit a double up the middle to advance Groves to third and Chipoletti doubled down the left field line to score her

Jarrell then singled to drive in both Chipoletti and Kidd. The left fielder advanced to second when the Saints’ centerfielder was unable to field the ball cleanly. Gatewood made it four straight hits with a single back to the pitcher. Gatewood immediately stole second, advanced to third on a throwing error by the shortstop trying to throw out Jarrell at home plate. After a Powell pop-up to second, Kat Hammond (Irmo, S.C.) singled to second base to drive in Gatewood.

After a Chelsie Hilbourn (Loris, S.C.) put runners at second and first, Groves finished the scoring for the Lady Indians with a home run to center field.

The Saints were held to just one hit through the first four innings but they broke through in the fifth with a single, a hit-by-pitch and a 2 RBI single to center field.

Edwards pitched seven innings to record her second complete game in as many days. The freshman struck out 11 batters in seven innings, giving her 20 strikeouts in her last two starts. With the win Edwards improved to 5-7 on the year.

Wallace went the distance in the game but picked up the loss for Limestone after giving up 12 hits and eight runs in six innings.

Newberry returns to the diamond on Thursday, March 13 when they host Claflin University in doubleheader action.
