Lady Indians close out regular season with 58-47 win over LMU on Senior Day

NEWBERRY - The Newberry College women's basketball team led from wire-to-wire in a 58-47 win over Lincoln Memorial University on Senior Day at Eleazer Arena.

The Lady Indians finish the regular season 18-9 overall and 7-7 in the South Atlantic Conference, good for a tie for third place.

Lincoln Memorial wraps up the regular season 13-14 overall and 3-11 in SAC play. The Lady Railsplitters finish in eighth place in the league.

Both teams struggled to score on the first few possessions, but a Tacarra Harris (Tupelo, Miss.) jumper put Newberry on the board first. Newberry's defense helped the Lady Indians pull away early, as the Lady Railsplitters were unable to connect on a field goal until Andi Winney's layup with 15:05 left in the first half.

From there, Newberry went on a 9-0 run to push the lead to 17-4 and continued to pull away to as many as 16 points with 10 minutes left in the half.

However, LMU answered back with a 14-0 run over the next five and a half minutes, cutting the deficit to two points at 23-21 on a Kara Harris triple with 4:34 remaining in the period.

Newberry outscored the Lady Railsplitters, 11-5, in the final 4:34 to take a 34-26 lead to the locker room.

LMU came out of the halftime break on a 6-0 run to cut the lead to two points, but was never able to tie up the game.

The Lady Indians' inside game stretched out the lead to 48-34 with 9:13 to play on a 12-0 run with baskets coming from Leanne Watson (Stone Mountain, Ga.), Tonique Frasier (Walterboro, S.C.), Sade Coates (Meridian, Miss.) and Harris as well as free throws from Brennen Long (Hopkins, S.C.).

Newberry held Lincoln Memorial to three field goals in the final nine minutes to earn the victory.

Appropriately, it was the seniors who led the scoring for Newberry. Frasier scored 16 points and grabbed eight rebounds and earning four steals to lead the team in each of those categories. Ashlee Wright (Myrtle Beach, S.C.) was the other Lady Indian in double digits with 10 points. It was also the final regular season home game for Carnicha Bellinger (Greenville, S.C.), Tosha Goodman (Winter Park, Fla.) and Ashley Marine (Peachtree City, Ga.).

Winney scored 18 points and pulled down six boards as the only Lady Railsplitters in double figures.

Newberry clinches a top four seeding and a home game in the 2008 Food Lion SAC Tournament. Pairings will officially be announced Sunday.
