NEWBERRY, S.C. – A sixth inning rally in Game Two allowed Newberry College to take one of two games against Coker College in doubleheader action Tuesday afternoon. The Lady Indians fell 5-4 in eight innings in Game One but came back to win Game Two, 4-3.

Aissa Gatewood (N. Charleston, S.C.) went 5-for-7 with three runs scored while Chelsie Hilbourn (Loris, S.C.) went 3-for-7 with four RBI.

Game One: Coker 5, Newberry 4 (8)
 Newberry was unable to score in the bottom of the eighth inning as the Lady Indians lost Game One 5-4.

Coker jumped out to an early 2-0 lead on a bloop single and a homerun to right field in the second inning.

Newberry responded in the bottom of the third with a three-run inning to take the lead. Gatewood started the rally with a two out double down the right field line. Jesse Groves (Suwanee, Ga.) followed with a single to center to score Gatewood. A Kat Hammond (Irmo, S.C.) walk put two on for Hilbourn. The freshman came through with a deep double to the opposite field to finish the scoring for the Lady Indians.

In the bottom of the fifth, Newberry extended its lead to 4-2 when Gatewood hit a double and stole third before being driven in by Hilbourn on an RBI single.

The Cobras pulled even in the top of the sixth inning when they put together two singles and a double to score two.

Neither team was able to push a run across in the seventh sending the game to extra innings.

In the top of the eighth Coker took a one run lead on a sacrifice fly to center field.

The Lady Indians went down in order in the bottom of the eighth, losing 5-4.

Katelin Edwards (Greer, S.C.) took the loss going eight innings and giving up five runs on six hits while striking out eight.

Game Two: Newberry 4, Coker 3
 Newberry scored one run in the bottom of the sixth and Kristen Hicks (Bamberg, S.C.) sat the Cobras down in order as the Lady Indians came from behind to win 4-3.

Coker took a 3-0 first inning lead on a three-run Kimberly Atkinson home run. The Cobras put the two runners on ahead of Atkinson with a hit by pitch and a single to second base. Atkinson then connected on a deep ball to right field.

Down 3-0, Newberry stormed right back in the bottom of the first, aided by three Atkinson errors at first base.

Gatewood singled to lead off the inning and advanced to third on a Groves sacrifice bunt and a wild pitch. After a Hammond walk, Hilbourn hit a dribbler to first base which Atkinson could not field cleanly. The first baseman then rushed the throw, missing the second baseman that was covering first. Gatewood scored and Hilbourn advanced to second on the play.

Tiffany Pigage (Lexington, S.C.) then hit a grounder to third but Atkinson was unable to handle the throw, allowing Hammond to score. Richelle Mirabal (Tampa, Fla.) drove in the Lady Indians final run of the inning with a single to score Hilbourn.

Neither team would score again until Newberry broke the deadlock in the bottom of the sixth inning. Mirabal earned a walk to start the inning and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Sara Powell (Ocean View, Del.). Chelsea Garrett (Auburn, Ga.) then hit a single to left and advanced to second on the throw.

The Cobras’ third baseman cut off the throw form the outfield and immediately threw to second to try and get Garrett. The throw went past the shortstop into the outfield allowing Mirabal to score the winning run.

After allowing three runs in the first inning Hicks shut down Coker through the rest of the game. The sophomore allowed just one more hit and struck out five as she went the distance for her sixth win of the season.

Newberry next travels St. Andrews Presbyterian to play a doubleheader against the Knights.
