Newberry sweeps double header against Barton

WILSON, N.C. – Newberry College scored 21 runs on 25 hits to sweep the Barton Bulldogs in double header action Saturday afternoon. The Lady Indians scored five runs in the seventh to comeback and win Game 1, 7-4 before dominating the Bulldogs 14-3 in Game 2.

Kat Hammond (Irmo, S.C.) was 4-for-7 from the plate with four RBI and three runs scored while Chelsie Hilbourn (Loris, S.C.) was 5-for-8 with four RBI and three runs scored.

Kristen Hicks (Bamberg, S.C.) picked up both wins for the Lady Indians going 7 2/3 innings and allowing just two earned runs.

GAME 1: Newberry 7, Barton 4
 Newberry scored five runs in the top of the seventh inning to overcome a two-run deficit and win Game one 7-4.

The Lady Indians took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first as Aissa Gatewood (N. Charleston, S.C.) led off with a single and quickly stole second base before getting driven in by Hammond.

The Bulldogs tied the score in the bottom of the second as Claire Severt reach on an error and scored on a single by Kimberly Lindsey.

Gatewood helped Newberry reclaim the lead in the top of the fifth as she again reached on a single and scored on a Hilbourn single.

Newberry was unable to hold the lead though as Barton scored three runs in the bottom of the fifth. Four different Bulldogs hit singles in the inning as Barton scored three runs to take a 4-2 lead.

The score remained 4-2 until the top of the seventh when the Lady Indians’ bats finally came to life.

Gatewood again got things started for Newberry with a bunt single. Ginna Dean (Willow Springs, N.C.) followed with an infield single and both scored on a Hammond single to pull the Lady Indians to tie the score at four..

After a Hilbourn flyout, six straight Newberry batters reached base as the team scored three more runs in the inning. Richelle Mirabal (Tampa, Fla.), McKenzie Phillips (Wallace, N.C.) and Jessica Teague (Charlotte, N.C.) all picked up RBI for the Lady Indians.

Hicks closed the door on the Bulldogs in the bottom of the seventh as she retired Barton in order in the bottom of the seventh.

Hicks picked up the win with 2 2/3 innings of shutout ball in relief.

Gatewood acted as the perfect table setter for the Lady Indians going 3-for-5 and scoring three runs.

GAME 2: Newberry 14, Barton 3 (5)
 Newberry scored all 14 runs in the final three innings as the Lady Indians cruised past the Bulldogs in Game Two of the double header.

Barton actually took an early lead with a Natalie Phipps home run in the bottom of the first inning.

The score remained 1-0 until the top of the third when the Lady Indians pulled ahead with four runs. Newberry loaded the bases as Amy Jarrell (Dover, Del.) hit a single, Chelsea Garrett (Auburn, Ga.) reached on an error and Hammond walked.

With the bases loaded for Hilbourn, the freshman came through with a single to center field to score both Jarrell and Garrett. Mirabal then followed with a single to score both Hammond and Hilbourn to put Newberry up 4-1.

After Barton pulled to within two in the bottom of the inning on an RBI single, Newberry again went on the offensive in the top of the fourth. The Lady Indians scored six runs to take a 10-2 lead.

Newberry quickly put two runners on with a hit by pitch and an error before Gatewood drove in the first of six with a fielder’s choice. Garret drove in both Gatewood and Jarrell with a single to left field.

Garrett advanced to third on a passed ball and scored on a Hammond ground out. Hilbourn and Dean then both reached on back to back singles and scored on a wild pitch.

In the top of the fifth, Newberry finished its scoring for the day with four more runs. Gatewood reached with two outs on a bunt single and scored on Garrett double. Hammonds and Hilbourn then followed with back to back triples to score two more runs. Dean drove in the final run as she reached on an error, scoring Hammond.

The Bulldogs scored one final run in the bottom of the fifth but were unable to pull to within eight as they were run ruled after five innings.  

Hicks pitched the complete game for her second win of the day and her fifth of the season. The sophomore allowed just two earned runs in the game.

Garrett, Hammond and Hilbourn combined to go 6-for-10 with eight RBI and eight runs scored.

Newberry retuns to action on Tuesday, February 19, when they host Coker College in double header action. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m.
