NEWBERRY, S.C. – The Newberry College Softball team split its doubleheader against Southern Wesleyan University Tuesday afternoon. The Lady Indians lost the first game, 4-3, before winning the second, 4-3 in eight innings.

The Lady Indians fall to 5-3 on the year while the Warriors improve to 2-4.

Kat Hammond (Irmo, S.C.) went 4-for-7 with two runs scored for Newberry while Chelsie Hilbourn (Loris, S.C.) had three RBI and one run scored.

GAME 1: Southern Wesleyan 4, Newberry 3
Jamie Johnson hit a homerun for the Warriors in the top of the seventh inning to propel Southern Wesleyan to a 4-3 win over Newberry.

After two innings of scoreless play, the Warriors jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the third when Melanie Massey drove in Jovina Bruton with a single up the middle.

Southern Wesleyan added to its lead in the top of the fourth with two singles and an RBI groundout.

Newberry pulled to within one in the bottom of the inning when Ginna Dean (Willow Springs, N.C.) connected with a single to drive in Hammond. Hammond hit a double down the left field line and advanced to third on a Sara Powell (Ocean View, Del.) sacrifice fly.

After the Warriors re-extended their lead with a double and a single in the top of the fifth, the Lady Indians pulled even with two runs in the bottom of the same inning.

Amy Jarrell (Dover, Del.) reached on a walk and Aissa Gatewood (N. Charleston, S.C.) followed with a single to left field. Hilbourn then drove the two in with a double down the left field line.

Neither team scored in the sixth, sending the game into the final inning still tied 3-3.

In the top of the seventh, Newberry picked up a quick out before Johnson hit a hard shot over the fence in left field to give the Warriors a 4-3 lead.

Down one, Newberry was unable to muster any offense in the bottom of the seventh as the team fell 4-3.

Breanna McMillan took the win for Southern Wesleyan as she went the complete game and gave up just three runs. Katelin Edwards (Greer, S.C.) picked up the loss for the Lady Indians.

Dean went 2-for-2 and Hilbourn had two RBI but the bottom half of the order was unable to put any offense together as the six through nine hitters went a combined 0-for-11.

GAME 2: Newberry 4, Southern Wesleyan 3 (8)
Newberry came back from an early 3-0 deficit to defeat Southern Wesleyan 4-3 on a bases loaded single by Richelle Mirabal (Tampa, Fla.) in extra innings.

The Warriors jumped out to a quick 2-0 first inning lead as Shawna and Jovita Bruton both got on base to lead off the game and were driven in by Johnson and Lauren Angel.

Southern Wesleyan added to its lead in the top of the fourth with an Ikeah Tate double and a Lianne Adkins sacrifice fly to go up 3-0.

In the bottom of the fourth the Lady Indians managed to tie the game with a three-run rally. Hammond led the inning off with a double up the middle and scored when Hilbourn hit a single into left field which the left fielder mishandled. Hilbourn advanced to third on the error and a subsequent one by the catcher.

After a Mirabal lineout, Chelsea Garrett (Auburn, Ga.) earned a walk and immediately took off for second. As the pitcher turned, Hilbourn left from third and scored when the shortstop’s throw missed the catcher. Garrett made it to third on the throw home. Hayden Kidd (Gaffney, S.C.) finished the scoring with a double to right center to score Garrett.

The game remained 3-3 through the seventh inning, sending the game into extra innings.

In the top of the seventh, the Warriors got runners on first and third with two outs, but Edwards forced Adkins to fly out to center to end the threat.

Newberry quickly loaded the bases for Mirabal in the bottom of the seventh as Hammond hit a single and Hilbourn was intentionally walked. Mirabal, who had lined out hard in her first three at bats, connected with a long single to right center to score Dean for the winning run.

Edwards pitched all eight innings to earn her third complete game win of the season. The freshman allowed nine hits and three runs in eight innings while striking out three.

Hammond and Gatewood each went 3-for-4 in the game for the Lady Indians.
