Newberry women's basketball falls to Georgia College & State, 68-42

MILLEDGVILLE, GA. - The Newberry College women's basketball team finished the Craig Massee Real Estate Classic 0-2 after losing to the Georgia College and State Bobcats on Tuesday, 68-42.

Helen McKinney (Owensboro, Ky.) was the leading scorer for Newberry with 19 points. She shot 6-for-17 from the floor and pulled down nine rebounds. The leading rebounder for the scarlet and gray was Janine Ward with a new career high of 11 rebounds.

Mandi Dudish (Snellville, Ga.) led the Bobcats to their fifth win of the season with a game high 21 points. She sank 7-of-11 from the field and 5-of-9 from three-point range. Tiauna Brantley (Woodstock, Ga.) also played well with a double-double of 11 points and 12 rebounds.

GCSU came out to an early nine point lead as Dudish quickly scored the first 14 points for her team. The Bobcats never let the opposition spark a run and slowly built on their lead. Newberry went back into the locker room trailing, 32-18. It was the least amount of points the scarlet and gray have scored in a half this season.

For the second game in a row, the scarlet and gray could not find a shooting rhythm in the opening half. They shot 21% from the field, 17% from three-point range, and 33% from the free throw line. The Bobcats only shot 36% from the field, but their three-point shooting (6-for-11) put them on top. On top of that, GCSU only committed four turnovers to Newberry's nine.

Anita Bulcher was the top scorer for NC in the opening period with seven points and four rebounds. She also shot 3-for-6 from the field. Bulcher would finish the day with 10 points and nine rebounds. Dudish burned the scarlet and gray in the first half with 16 points on 4-for-5 shooting from downtown.

The Bobcats carried their momentum into the second half as they continued to build on their lead. Newberry could not find a rhythm as GCSU led by 20 points with 13:32 remaining on the clock. A pair of threes cut the deficit to 15 at one point but the scarlet and gray could not get any closer than that. The 26 point margin of defeat is the highest of the season.

McKinney finished the game strong, scoring 13 of her 19 points in the second half. The leading scorer for the Bobcats in the second half was Antoinette Reames (Orlando, Fla.) with eight.

Newberry had one of their worst shooting days of the season, shooting 23% from the floor, 19% from behind the arc, and 45% from the free throw line. The team also committed 19 turnovers for the second time in a row.

The loss puts the Newberry College women's basketball team at 8-4 on the season. They will return home this Saturday, January 3 to face off against Carson-Newman at 2 p.m. GCSU, now 4-3 overall, will stay at home to play Valdosta St. in their next game at 7 p.m.
