Box Score NEWBERRY S.C. - The Newberry College volleyball team extended their winning streak to four matches Saturday afternoon by beating the Mars Hill Lions, 3-0 (25-14, 25-18, 25-15).
Priscila Sales (Belo Horizonte, Brazil) had a solid outing Saturday with a match high 13 kills to go along with nine digs and three service aces. Although Lorena Maia (Belo Horizonte, Brazil) had half as many attacks as Sales, she took care of the ball very well and earned nine kills, three aces, and an attack percentage of .533. Brianna Blakely (Houston, Texas) earned a match high 26 assists while Nadia Andrade (Belo Horizonte, Brazil) earned a match high 14 digs.
Jenna Luke (Michawaka, Ind.) led the way for the Lions with a team high eight kills on 18 attacks. Jessica Britt (Chesapeake, Va.) also played well, leading her team in assists with 12. Evie Tufanie (Edwardsburg, Mich.) earned a team high 10 digs.
Coming off a huge win against Tusculum the night before, Newberry came out strong and opened up a 7-2 lead. The scarlet and gray controlled the pace of the first set and never gave the Lions a shot at making a run. NC won the opening set in dominant fashion, 25-14. Defense was the key to the set win and Andrade led the way. Her eight digs was twice as much as any other player on the court.
The scarlet and gray did not earn the early lead again but still controlled the pace of the second set. Newberry never had a significant run but slowly broke through the Mars Hill defense. They led by as much as eight points in the set and went on to win, 25-18.
The first half of the final set was tight as the Lions refused to give in. They managed to keep up with Newberry and even tied the set at 13 all. Unfortunately for them, NC would dominate the set down the stretch. They only gave up two more points and won, 25-15. Dani Hroblak (Lake Wylie, S.C.) was clearly focused in the final set and minimized her mistakes. She did not commit any attack errors and earned three kills which gave her a .429 attack percentage.
The Newberry College volleyball team now claims sole possession of second place in the South Atlantic Conference with a conference record of 8-3 and an overall record of 16-7. They will return to action this Wednesday at home to take on Wingate at 7 p.m.
