SALISBURY, N.C. - The Newberry College women's basketball team picked up its fourth South Atlantic Conference victory of the season with a 63-49 win over the Catawba College Lady Indians in Goodman Gym on Saturday.

The teams battled back and forth early, but Newberry claimed the lead for good with 8:51 until the break on a Wright layup.
Catawba's Christi Bartlett cut Newberry's lead to 17-16 with 6:46 until the half, but that would be the hosts' final score in the first period. Newberry closed out the half on a 10-0 run, taking a 27-16 lead into the break.
Leanne Watson (Stone Mountain, Ga.) scored on a jumper on the opening possession of the second half and the Lady Indians never looked back. Catawba made a valiant effort to cut into the lead as the game progressed, but the home team never made it closer than an eight-point margin.
Newberry scored the final five points of the game to earn the 63-49 win.
Catawba only shot 16-of-60 (26.7 percent) from the floor and Newberry used the poor shooting to its advantage by collecting 44 rebounds - 36 on the defensive end - while Catawba only grabbed 29 boards.
The Lady Indians return to the friendly confines of Eleazer Arena to finish the first trip through the South Atlantic Conference for a Wednesday night matchup with provisional conference member Brevard College at 6 p.m. Catawba travels to Carson-Newman on Wednesday.
