Newberry falls to Mars Hill, 3-1

MARS HILL, N.C. - Newberry College fell, 3-1, to Mars Hill College in South Atlantic Conference women's soccer action Tuesday night. The loss drops Newberry to 4-2-4 on the year and 2-1-1 in the SAC.

Brooke Tumblin (Florence, S.C.) scored her fourth goal of the season and Danielle Beckerle (St. Louis, Mo.) recorded seven saves for Newberry, which had previously been undefeated in Division II play.

Abby Martin scored two goals and Claudia Cala made eight saves to lead Mars Hill

Martin scored the first goal of the match at the 31:32 mark off a header from a free kick by Frankie Armstrong. The score remained 1-0 into halftime.

Garrett Patton gave Mars Hill a 2-0 advantage at the 51:24 mark scoring off a deflection. Martin then added an insurance goal in the 58th minute on a breakaway. Brooke Tumblin (Florence, SC) scored Newberry's only goal at the 76:21 mark off a rebound.

Newberry had 14 shots in the second half but Cala had eight saves including three straight during a Newberry offensive attack in the 61st minute.

The Lady Indians' next game is Saturday, September 29, when they travel to Greeneville, Tenn., to face off against Tusculum College.
