Lady Indians continue hot start with sweep of Limestone

Box Score

AUGUSTA, Ga. - The Newberry College women's volleyball team continued its hot start with a 30-20, 30-15, 30-23 sweep of Limestone College in the Augusta State Jaguar Classic on Saturday morning.

Newberry (3-0) was paced by junior Priscila Sales (Belo Horizonte, Brazil) with 18 kills to defeat the Lady Saints (1-2). Sales also had two service aces and 13 digs.

The Lady Indians started off swinging well with 13 kills in the opening game. But the match just got worse for Limestone as Newberry improved on its kill total in each game, with 16 kills in the second and 17 kills in the third. Cara Coleman (Allentown, Pa.) helped seal the first game win with a run of nine straight serves, giving Newberry a 13-point lead.

Coleman led the team with five solo blocks and two assists.

The highlight of the second game was the arm of junior Kember Lichtie (Amarillo, Texas). The transfer was perfect in the second game, hitting six kills on six attempts. Sales added on six kills in the second game as well.

The game ended with an emphatic solo block from sophomore Niki Hroblak (Lake Wylie, S.C.).

Limestone jumped out to an early lead in the third game, giving Newberry its first deficit of the season. But the Lady Indians regained their focus and fought back behind seven kills from Sales, five from Coleman and four from freshman Kara Harris (Grandview, Texas).

Harris had a good showing in her first collegiate start, with seven kills to go with a team-high 28 digs.

The setters played well to help the hitters out, with sophomore Kilee Ruppe (Spartanburg, S.C.) dishing out 11 assists in the first game and freshman Brianna Blakely (Houston, Texas) passing out 30 assists in the second and third games.

Defensively, Christy Stegall (Fort Mill, S.C.) and Nadia Andrade (Belo Horizonte, Brazil) split time at libero and did a good job keeping the ball off of the Lady Indians' side of the court. Andrade dug out 25 balls in two games, while Stegall kept the ball alive 18 times.

Overall, the team had a stellar .357 hitting percentage, pounding out 46 kills to only 11 errors on 101 attacks. Through three matches, Newberry is hitting .356 as a team.

The Lady Indians will look to keep their good team play going and the winning streak alive today at 4 p.m., as they close out tournament action against the host institution, Augusta State.
