Box Score 2 ANDERSON, S.C. - Newberry collected two wins in a sweep of Anderson in a record-breaking non-conference doubleheader at Smethers Field on Monday.
The Lady Indians ran their win total to 34 with the two victories, tying the 2002 squad for the most victories in a season.
Also, senior Courtney Lindler notched four RBIs to bring her season total to 54 and break the school's single-season RBI record, which previously stood at 49.
Game One: Newberry 3, Anderson 2
Newberry scored two runs in the fourth inning for a 3-2 win in game one of the doubleheader.
In game one, Anderson scored two runs in the third inning on a two-run blast by Kayla Williams to take a 2-1 lead.
But Newberry scratched out two runs, the second one unearned, for the victory.
Stephanie Monette (Conway, S.C., 16-11) picked up the win in four innings of work for the Lady Indians.
Donya Cobb was saddled with the loss for the Lady Trojans in five innings of work.
Kayla Williams was 2-for-4 for Anderson with two RBI. Ellen Steele also collected two hits for the Trojans in three plate appearances.
Courtney Lindler (Irmo, S.C.) was 2-for-4 for the Indians with an RBI. The RBI pushed Lindler over the 50 RBI plateau for the season, giving her the Newberry single-season record.
Game Two: Newberry 8, Anderson 1
In game two, the Indians used a three runs on three hits to take a 3-0 lead.
In the sixth inning, Lindler hit a three-run double to spark a five-run Newberry inning to make it 8-0.
Christina Kirby (Delmar, Del., 15-10) earned the win the circle for the Indians, while Katie Van Gieson took the loss for the Lady Trojans.
The Indians were lead offensively by Lindler, who was 2-for-3 with three RBI, and by Ginna Dean (Willow Springs, N.C.) who was 2-for-2 with a run scored.
Meredith Knox led the Trojans by going 2-for-3 with a run scored. Stephanie Griffis added two hits for the Lady Trojans.
Newberry wraps up its regular season at 34-23-1 entering this week's Food Lion South Atlantic Conference Tournament. The Lady Indians are seeded sixth, and will face third-seed Wingate at 11:45 a.m. Thursday at Presbyterian College in Clinton, S.C.
Anderson finishes the regular season 25-14. The Lady Trojans' next action is the CVAC Tournament Friday in Florence, S.C.
